I've never had one of these break, but nothing is bombproof. Every climbing method can fail. Harnesses are a requirement as soon as you get past the 1st step.
These type of steps do need to be used properly. They need to be fully inserted into the tree so the vertical part of the step makes contact with the tree.
I still climb, but now it's tree bolts and a saddle for me.
