Live from the Stand 2018

Back at it. She wanted to sit this stand again since we saw deer last time. Been heavy showers all afternoon but looks like the have cleared off and it's overcast. Should be a good evening.

This is my view to the north this afternoon. Yesterday I had to come over here for a while and one of our biggest bucks was in that mowed lane past the little green plot at 8:10 am. Today we have 15 mph winds. Sunny and 60 def at present.

We had some success tonight. The storm front warmed it up and the bucks stopped chasing. We watched a spike feed for about 30 mins then a couple of does ran him off. After they left this one walked out and she said we should shoot it since it was by itself and the other deer wouldn't know.

I love how kids quantify a situation. In my opinion their logic is more sound then some tree hungers trying to save the planet from ourselves. Good job and great memories

Here is the story of our muzzleloader hunt. I will get some better pictures tomorrow. I taped his 8 point at 140.5 gross. This deer looks very old, and I will get the tax man to age it for us.

The morning hunt was pretty much uneventful. We did see two young bucks and a few does, but not really much to talk about. We came out mid day for a break and went back in around 2:00 PM. The wind started picking up and we had a constant 15 mph wind with gusts up to 25. I told my son that some wind was good, but those gusts didn't appeal to me much. Finally it settled a little and about an hour or so before dark, deer started coming out at different places.

We saw three young bucks and one of them was really beautiful. He will be a dandy if he makes it two more years. He was working a scrape and licking branch that I didn't even know was there. Finally, about 20 minutes before dark I saw commotion break loose in some tall grass. Two does come busting through like bats out of Hades. Right behind them was this big sucker. He looked like a tank busting through the grass. He came by us two times a little past 100 yards in a plot, but was moving so fast we couldn't even get the gun in place to shoot.

Finally everything just died down and all we saw was a few deer feeding at different places in my mini plots that are scattered about. Then suddenly here he came out of the tall grass about 120 yards away, walking the edge of one of my plots toward a mock scrape I made last week. He was broad side to us and just walking slowly. My son got the new muzzleloader up, got on him and dropped him in his tracks.

This was a special hunt for us. His birthday is in 3 days, and the first thing I said when he pulled the trigger was "happy birthday. I'm going to mount that deer for your birthday present this year." Some good father and son bonding right there for sure.

Edit - added some pictures

Doesn't get any better than that Native. Congrats to your son on a fine buck and to you on providing the habitat to keep big boys like that stud hanging around on your place!

Thank you Triple C. It's days like yesterday that makes the habitat work seem easier than normal and pumps me up to get back out there an do some more work. He was really excited about that deer, and it was one of the best hunts we have ever had together.

I skipped this morning but hope to be back out myself this afternoon. Maybe I can hook up with the 14 pointer!!

Native that is great. Great rack but what a body on that deer.

Thanks Lak. Yes, that body reminded me of an Angus Bull. I have been seeing a lot of deer fighting on cameras recently, but not this one. The others would just run off when he came around....:D

Good going Native. Happy birthday to your son and happy Fathers day for the year to come and it just can't get any better. And all of us following your threads know that this stuff doesn't happen by chance. You are making it happen with your management technique, trigger restraint and hard work. I'm happy for you buddy!
Your son evidently is a hunter as well as he closed the deal on a not so close distance on a deer that would make any of us shake more than a bit. Congratulations to both of you in helping to grow a great deer to maturity and also to harvest it in a sporting manner and to top it off doing it TOGETHER,What a GREAT HUNT STORY!

Dave, thanks so much, and that means a lot coming from you. I know that you are a great steward of the land and a hunter who appreciates the important things in life. I feel so blessed to be able to enjoy such a nice weekend. It would be good without a harvest, but I guess the harvest is the icing on the cake.

Best wishes to you in your hunting this year, and keep us informed on how things go.

In my set tonight I saw many deer and a nice 3 year old buck right at dark. The one I was after didn't show, but that just means joyful anticipation for another day.

Nice buck! One of the oldest looking ive seen.

Got a doe today at 30 yards. Double lung rage, heard her drop in the woods.

Strange part is her other two friends came after her being shot, just walking with their tails up.

As I told you Native , that was a great deer and to do along side your son is just perfect. He makes prettier pictures than you thankgoodness. Congrats and good luck on your deer. I hunted last night but didn’t get on till 5. They were out in fields big time after our 60mph winds and snow Sat night. Had several 2yo bucks munching acorns under my tree but no shooters. Again congrats.

Native - What a great deer, congratulations to you and your son both. In the long run it's those memories that are the real trophy. Also, if you're looking to adopt I know a 41 year old that's interested. :)

Looks like I'm going to be spending some time in a tree. Walked into the office this morning for my first day back from vacation. Seems some things have changed while I was gone. Like my job. Guess they came to the decision it could run without me while I was away. Told me I was no longer needed. I'm going to hop on a tractor and see the world from a different point of view

Just had a doe andfawn pass through. Looks like they might have been coming out of the food plot that was drowned out a couple weeks back.
