Live from the Stand 2018

Pinesap, I feel your pain, although my out-of-element experiences are all behind me now, sometimes you gotta take one for the team.

I thought I was gonna be hunting this weekend too, but the weather did not do as forecast, so I did a little handgun shooting Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon was spent dodging tornadoes. I think we had 5 or 6 warnings in the surrounding area last night. One had us gathered in my shop next to the storm room (10'x12' concrete room) for about an hour.

Getting my pacemaker replaced tomorrow, so maybe next weekend.......

I ended up getting one of the turkeys with my crossbow...

The evening hunt was insane on my south plot.

I passed 3 8's, a 9, and a 10 trying to get a shot at a giant 6 pointer (bigger than I have ever seen or had on camera) in our plot. At 1 time I had 17 deer in front of me and under me...put my phone up when big deer started showing up...a dog ended up clearing the field before the big 6 got lined up...

Glad you're seeing something. Saw 4 does in broad daylight laying in a field yesterday, about 100 yards from my stand. Saw 4 at night.

First weekend was a bust, very hot and tons of bugs.

I think they are moving out of the woods now, not many acorns on our place at all.

Also had an encounter with the county sheriff. First thought I was a burglar, then a poacher. No deer, but a cool story.

Would like to hear the story sometime...

Dogs running through our place made my morning hunt a bust today. This evening it started raining as soon as I went out and I sat 1/2 way back into the property. Saw a doe, a fawn, and a spike...

Well last night i was grumpy, so i decided to sleep in. FIL drove by my stand about 8:30 and they were feeding right next to it.

For the law...i went to a friends 40 acres that ive been wanting to hunt for years. About 35 acres of beans, 5 acres of woods. Never been there before, so he gave me a pin and description. He didnt know if there were any stands on it, so i brought my climber. I was able to see a ladder stand from the road and it was raining and cold so i chose that instead of hauling my climber and trimming a pecan tree, as there arent many tall straight trees up near Kansas.

Got to my stand and noticed a blue truck parked in front of my truck and some people walking around it, at the other corner f the 40, then they drove slow up and down the road watching me in the stand.

So im texting my friend the landowner, and he said if you are sure you're in the right spot you're probably about to get your truck stolen. After confirming i was on the right property i walked back through the standing bean field (not that easy) with all my junk. Thought i was about to get into a brawl over my truck.

Get there and the county sheriff was standing there, and said are you (my name). He said we followed your tracks from the house and thought you were parked around back to load up (house is empty), then your plate came back clean so we werent leaving until we got ahold of the landowner.

So, good on the patrolling, but i got way too much exercise in. Didnt ask me for my ID or hunting license and said good luck. I wish they would patrol where i regularly hunt like that...

Slow weekend for us in the woods. Sat in the stand for 3 morning hunts and 2 evening ones. Saw a few deer wash night expect for last night. Bucks we saw were still in bachelor groups which is un heard of for this late in the year. With this cold weather that finally moved in this weekend, I believe that is about to change though.

Oh the awesomeness of sitting on stand and hearing a man and woman having a knock down drag out cuss fight about 300 yards away.. f-bombs just a flying...hope I don’t get hit by one...

Thank you for keeping an eye on my place. That would be my wife's cousin's. It happens daily. At least twice a week I have to go over there because he's been drinking and decided to let her taste the back of his hand. In the end she always goes back to him. But none the less. Appreciate you watching my place

That ain't real conducive to the peace and tranquility and the harmonization with the woodland creatures. :(

This thread gave me some good laughs tonight.

The best was the state of psychogenic fugue on Pine Sap's face from Disney World and a close second was Okie dodging the F-bombs from a tree stand. Thanks for making my evening guys.

Maybe I can add to the thread this weekend. We have a 2 day smokepole season, and I'm pumped for it.

Good luck Native, I'm going for the first time this weekend myself. Gonna try to take a doe home, I'm close to being out of meat.

A couple things I learned...I have hinge cut a bunch of stuff between my neighbors and the plot (300 yards or so between them) and I binge cut extensively between the county road and the plot (75-100 yards) and the deer pay very little attention to those areas now. I know when I first built the plot the deer would leave the plot every time a car came down the road and would pay a bunch of attention to anything the neighbors did. Now they will barely even look when someone is screaming obscenities and banging junk around in the back of a truck along the road like was happening last night...this was going on during all of that and I only heard 2 different rifle shots last night and they weren’t along my fence :)

13 in the plot at 1 time...some where off camera as I can’t get the entire plot in one photo...

Those who bow hunt only know that pain. This makes the 14th season without a gun (no I'm not a felon). It happens, but boy is it sweet when it works out just right
60 yards and then kept going! Next time!

Good luck to you guys. I’m living vicariously thru all your endeavors. And i agree, this thread is cracking me up. I’ll be back out this fri with plans to take my buddy whose in middle of chemo before surgery. Plan to put him and his crossbow on top of 10 pt Bad Wheel in hopes he gets to take him. And another visiting friend who wants a doe placed on a doe honey hole. Keep postings going.

back it tonight.....different property. 55ish degrees but strojg west wind at 15 mph. Didn't set up in my "good" spot as I am hoping they are gonna be working this big oak bottom to get some remaining acorns and to avoid the wind. We will see if I guessed right!
