Soybean Planting?

Smallplot...I finally had time to watch your video. The higher rate does look better. I planted cowpeas once on a small scale planting and the deer kept them mowed down but they kept growing all season but next year I'm going to plant a lot more acreage. So maybe the soybeans have a fighting chance.

Bigbluetruck...I know it's better to plant with a planter but I can rent a drill for $8 acre and I can plant a long time before it would justify to buy an actual planter but I did see one on Craiglist worth the price and I had temptation to buy but until I am sure I can produce the results I want I passed on it.

Just to add to bigbluetruck’s post. Beans nowadays usually are sold by a unit count bag, much like corn, and not by weight. I typically use weight on here because that is what many people understand. So a bag of seed beans comes with 140000 seeds per bag and the bags weight changes from year to year based on the crop used for seed beans.
So the higher rate was planted at around 175000 rate. Further these are food plots and not production crops so we have leeway.
A lot of soybeans are broadcast and incorporated for food plots with good success. Moving on to drills, which is a somewhat controlled spill, allows better placement than the previous. And finally we come to planters. Yes they space out each seed better and depth is better controlled but is that necessary when many people have great success with so much less. What a true no till drill offers is savings in time, fuel, and capital.

Much agreed Smallplot, for food plot purposes a drill will work just fine, I was just pointing out some possible reasons why a drilled bean plot may not succeed like a plot planted with a planter.

No till is all we use. On our bigger plots we cut with a hay cutter and either rake or burn it off after the cut grass has dried. Then we come in with the no till drill and plant wheat and oats. Our drill has a small compartment for planting clover as well.
