My grandfather has seen fur prices become a joke, quail and pheasant disappear, and rabbits become a suburban animal because of high coyote numbers. Never assume game will be plentiful.

Amen to that. I know when seeing a deer track was pretty dang special. Land use and practices have a BIG impact on game populations and thus our hunting traditions. My dad used to trap as well, but like you said now you do it for the fun, because there is little money in it any more. Farming practices have removed miles and miles of fence rows and there is no-longer the requirement for set-aside acres as well so lots of habitat for small game and upland birds is gone. I know several guys who simply can't find a place to even work their dogs....they don't even want to shoot the critter, they just like to see the dogs work.

Nice score with the chestnuts..... I produced my first few this year....only 2 or 3 viable nuts. You been seeing much deer activity yet?
 
Mostly little bucks on camera. Big guys at night. No rubbing or scraping to speak of. I've seen an uptick of road kills, so maybe soon. I've been far too busy to hunt anyway.

I just drove up I-69 from Indy to Marshall, MI and then from Marshall to Ann Arbor on I-94 and I counted 6 road kill deer - mostly young bucks......something has them stirring. I have seen some real small rubs but nothing to speak of as well. Typically October here is pretty warm and I don;t bother much, but this year, thus far October seems to be much more decent weather for deer hunting. That's because I don;t have all my stand sup yet....as soon as I get to the point I'm ready to hunt it will get hot again!
 
Starting on Saturday, I'm planning on hunting 7 out of 9 days. I don't plan on hunting real hard, enjoying the farm and hard work of the spring and summer, fishing, hunting with my boy, and just overall enjoying life and nature. My dad should be in camp some and 2 close friends. I might take my five year old on her first hunt.

Things are starting to become active in some areas of Indiana......I just drove down I-69 yesterday evening from the state line with Michigan to Fort Wayne and I counter 6 different roadkill deer that I saw just in that fairly short stretch so the deer are certainly starting to move. I wasn't able to count RK south of Fort Wayne as it was too dark by then..... There wasn't much to speak off that I saw when I drove up Monday morning though.
 
First time time at the Dugout in a couple of months. Disappointed in the amount of sign and camera movement compared to central Indiana. Food plots look great and the lack of sign is nothing that a little time won’t fix.

Nice views there! Plots look good. I look for this year to be another struggle for most of the state. The weather has cooperated, but with our declining herd, I fear opportunities are going to be fewer and fewer state wide. Good luck out there and be safe!
 
I’ve never been a cat person, but I hate them now. My daughter has cat scratch fever. Nasty little bug, cost me hunting 2 late October cold fronts. She’s doing better, but she was a sick little girl this week.
Beautiful time of the year here Indiana. Ready for the stand.

A couple of my setups from the weekend. Deer were moving. 2 big buck sightings in camp, but my buddy and my dad couldn’t quite get it done. It was sure wonderful being out in God’s creation.

Nice....very nice. I love this time of year in IN. Trees changing colors some good green food, the smell of fall in the air! Nice views there!!!
 
Beautiful. Reminds me of some good times in that area. Talked to my cousin who was hunting National Forest land in Lawrence County this past weekend, he’s bummed about the lack of sightings and sign in that area. Seems the Forest Service decided to start clearing storm choked trails about October 25th.
