drum smoker build

That's really good looking Doc. Did you guys think up that technique, or is it a common practice with guys who know about painting stuff?
A friend on the lease owns a sign company(repairs, makes and installs). This is a technique they us to paint sign faces.

Neat. I didn't know there was such a thing as high temp clear coat. I like it!
I didn't either until last week. Found it at Oreilly's Auto parts store. They have two stores in town that mix paint so they had a little better selection.

That's very cool. I'm already thinking about a second build. I want to do a double walled one for winter cooking.
I'm going to borrow your technique for it. Very nice!

You can apply as many initial coats as you want and then you can put as many over the sticker as you want. The more coats over the sticker, the more pronounced it is. Just be careful that you don't do to many, you won't be able to find the sticker.

I'm thinking to place the sticker over bare metal, then paint. The emblem would show surface rust and change over time. Cool? Or bad idea?

The only thing I would worry about is the rust eventually getting under the clear coat. You could let it rust and then apply some clear coat over it later.

Well now we can't have you waiting around for that now can we?

This is not deer hunting/habitat related at all but hey it's off season and what's a guy to do on the hottest week of the year. Let's build a smoker!
I've been wanting a charcoal/wood smoker for a while now but the ones I'm interested in are usually out of my price range and too large for my needs. I also do not "need" another meat cooker on the deck. Currently I have a charcoal grill, a propane grill and an electric smoker. I've also wanted to try my hand at cooking brisket. None of my grills are suited for the long haul that a brisket requires. So off I go to the internet to research inexpensive brisket cookers. What I found was the UDS. The Ugly Drum Smoker. Type UDS in your browser and you can spend the next 14 hours watching You Tube video's on the variety of ways to make a UDS. Some are pretty basic and some are more advanced but all seem to hold heat well and slow cook with one load of fuel for 18+ hours. This plus the small footprint of the UDS is appealing to me. Most UDS's are really not ugly at all. Some have gotten downright creative with their themes, schemes, and designs such as this Star Wars Geek:

I have no intentions of doing anything quite that.. well.. uh.. bizarre. I do like to be a bit creative but functionality is primary for me.

Your UDS is fancy. I have built two UDS. Both are plane Jane types. I bought my Barrels new from Buckner Barrel in Springville, Al. (30 miles from home)
I drilled (8) 1" holes in the lid, and made stoppers from 3/4" pipe pieces 1" long. I have endcaps on these... and I bought stainless hardware for my builds. My Intake is (4) 1" holes with short pipe nipples and endcaps. I gave in and sold my first UDS to a neighbor, so I build me another. My UDS has two racks, and a fire basket sitting on bolts for charcoal.
My racks are 22" Weber racks bought at Walmart.
I also have an old Weber lid I can use on my UDS as well.
