Bur oak close up (acorn watch)

I snapped a shot of my bur oak tips. I am farting around with trying to stimulate acorn production by adding room, lime, gypsum, and sunlight. I had all the work and inputs down before the snow melted. Now I'm seeing little clusters on my branches.

Are these acorns in the making?

My experience with bur oak is that you won't see actual acorns start to form until later into the summer. What you will see in the spring is the "flower" - which is obviously a good sign and a step in the right direction. For what it's worth I had a bur that I released 2 years ago. At the time I released it it didn't produce a single acorn that I could tell. The first full year after being released it produced some, and the second year it really produced. The squirrels attacked it as all I found was piles of the peeled bur caps at the based of the tree......but the evidence showed that it produced better than it had even done before. So be patient with it.....it may take a year or two for it to really show the results of your work. All I did was give it some sunlight.......

I'm ok with that. I'm not risking it with anything that could burn or alter the growth like nitrogen. I'm just trying to make things more hospitable so they can do what they do.

I'll keep watching as the summer rolls on. The iPhone has proven a great tool for getting close up pics at the tips.

My i-pone gets more use taking habitat pictures and as a game to pass time while on stand than any other function......not sure why they call it a "PHONE" ......who uses it as a phone????

I love being more aware of stuff that I've never paid attention to in the past, largely because of groups like these. Here's a picture of some red oaks blooming.

I caught the red oak bloom last year for the first time, and I was just puzzled at those pink blossoms. Fun thing to know going forward.
