Turkey Hunting Thread!

That's a great idea! I do have one so I will use that!

I went across the road to put in the 4x4 post for my new banks feeder and the Tom's were walking along beside me at 15 yards from my tractor...gonna have to put a scabbard on that thing...saw 6 longbeards from the seat...

Been a great opening week so far. Here are a few pics

My daughter and I had a fantastic hunt last week. She's away at school and doesn't get to come home much to hunt. Turkey hunting is something we both really enjoy. After one unsuccessful hunt, the next day we located this bird on the roost, moved in and started calling. He read the script and came in really putting on a show, gobbling and strutting the whole way...just like a TV show! My daughter handled my little 20 ga well. It's a special feeling to see her so happy after a successful hunt.

Have had one gobbling for a while across the fence. He has since quieted down. Still gobbles now and then but want cross the line. He did come within 150 yards of me so was close to crossing. Still time left.

Went a few hours out in Kansas this weekend. Saw some new country and got WHOOPED by the turkeys. Public land birds are always a good time!

Finally got my first gobbler. I killed a jake two years ago hunting with my dad. That was my first turkey. Last year got skunked although I was only able to hunt about 3 times. This year I had a jake come to decoy first hunt, called a gobbler to within 20 yards on the second hunt but missed him trying to shoot through some brush, third hunt went in the afternoon and did not see or hear anything.

This hunt I was going to go back to where I missed the Tom two weeks ago, but within minutes of leaving the truck I heard a turkey gobbling down the road I was walking on in the pine plantation. I put the decoy in the middle of the road and found a decent spot to sit down in on the side of the road. The turkey did not sound like he was moving for about 30 minutes. Then he sounded like he moved further to my right but was getting closer. I was pretty sure he was coming down another road that ran parallel to mine about thirty yards through the pine plantation. I got pretty aggressive on the call (I'm still a newby trying to learn how to call) and he was responding. I heard some flapping and wasn't sure where it was coming from then the turkey came flying in from where I thought he was. I was not expecting that! I couldn't see him land and it got quiet so I hit the box call one more time and waited. About a minute later he came into view strutting toward the hen decoy. I was in awe watching him strut and was trying to figure out how to get my gun up as he was only about 10 yards away.

He turned away from me in full strut and I was able to get my gun up. As he turned back around to the left side of the decoy he was directly facing me and I took the shot. It rolled him backwards about three feet and left a feather debris field about 6 foot in diameter. The best part is I caught it all on my Gopro which I had on my head. I turned it on literally about two minutes before he flew in. The bad is it was set on wide angle and it looks much farther away than it really was. It's still neat to have it saved on video.

That must have been heart pounding! You are now hooked. What a great experience!

The birds at my place are'nt responding to any calls. I heard 11 different Toms this morning. There were 4-5 in 1 bunch gobbling. I am going to buy a gobbler call. I've hunted turkeys for 40 years and never seen it this bad. It seems the Toms were going to each other. Frustrating.

They were walking past my window all day yesterday (1st day of Pa youth season)
Here's a couple pics I took while eating my breakfast. I could have taken 50 more pics. They were hanging around all day. At times, they were 3 yards from my deck.

Opening day of Ohio youth season yesterday was a success. After some calling right after shooting light opened, 2 coyotes came running 15 yards in front of the blind. Not expecting it at all I wasn't able to stop them or get my gun up in time before they realized something was up and made it back into the woods. Not expecting much activity after that, I was happy to see two lone hens about a half hour apart. Right when I was thinking about calling it a morning, wouldn't you know there was a gobble behind me in the woods. After a little calling and some patience, two gobblers made their way out into the field and towards my decoys. Unfortunately my batteries in the camera had died very quickly while recording a hen due to the cold, but i was able to make a 30 yard shot and kill my first turkey! 10 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs made for a great first bird, and I am excited to get back out for my second.

There is some great photography on this thread with the colors of the turkey plumage showing very nicely. Congratulations to all the successful hunts so far.

But Man Oh Man having just looked at page 6 of this thread, DR. Dirt Nap and Farmer each have magazine cover material with their photographs. The expressions and composition and lighting of the two kids holding the turkey over the fence is just awesome as is the huge smile and composition of the photograph on DR. Dirt Map's daughter holding the bird over her shoulder and looking back is unbeatable.

I once got lucky with a coon hunting picture of my son (David) and one of our coon hounds and sent it in to a coon hunting magazine granting them permission to use it. That was many years ago but David and I still enjoy seeing that picture hanging on the wall.

Do you guys just breast and release or are you taking the whole turkey? I typically just take the breast but the boy wanted the drumsticks off of his. I have a couple of recipes to try but figure they are going to take some long slow cooking!

I've tried legs before, so tough almost inedible. I'm going to try them again in the pressure cooker. I killed 2 this week in NEMO, and my neighbor gave me his bird. DEFINITELY eat the thighs! They are good. We slow cook them and make turkey noodles, nothing like the legs.

+1. The wife threw all the dark meat into a pot and simmered for several hours, then stripped the meat off the leg bones. Made homemade turkey and noodles and it was fantastic. Don't throw them away, as there is a lot of meat on the legs and back.
