Anyone plant trees for hunting blind

We have an open field on a ridge top that would be great to hunt with a W or NW wind. Only problem is you'd have to hunt from a spot on the top of the ridge.

Has anyone ever planted a clump of trees (thinking cedar) with intention of hunting from middle of it?

It would work great if you had the patience for the cedars to grow and fill in. I would think planting it like some guys on here do a road screen would work, start with hybrid willows to grow fast and fill in the first year. Plant cedars in the gaps and both should be easy to trim some lanes through as they grow in. I had thought about planting azaleas down my road as a screen. Sounds crazy for a lawn plant, but it grows great in my soils, gets 6 to 8 ft tall, stays green year round, and wont be browsed so no need to protect to cage. Also, I have 100s of free sprouts at my house to transplant. A similar garden plant may work for you.

I ordered 100 miscanthus gigantus rhizomes just for this purpose this year. Well, about 30 will be for this purpose, and then 70 to finish of a screen.

Hope they work!

Eastern Red cedars are my preferred choice, solid trees and great for putting a blind in

I figured red cedars would be the choice and I'd just transplant them. We have rogue cedars everywhere (just not the middle of a ridge top ag field). Could move several 5' trees.

Red cedar? No. The wait is simply too long to anticipate.
PitchXloblolly pine? Yes. I killed a deer from a pitchXlob pine i planted 13 years before.

Fish, not looking for a tree stand. Just a ground blind. If I put in 5-6 Red cedar in a circle that are already 5' I bet I could use it this year.

I would suggest a 2 prong approach. A short term solution with something like switchgrass, EW or the miscunthus. This will grow much faster. Then also plant a longer term solution with a conifer of your choice. Just a suggestion.

I have done this with several of my box blinds. They are anywhere from 6' to 16' off the ground. I have planted switch, red cedar, and hybrid willow and poplars around them. The trees were either 2 year old transplants or cuttings and they are now max 5 years old. In ten years the blind will be hidden except for where I cut out the shooting holes. At five years the shorter ones are hid/blended in well and block my approach and exit.

I had to fence in the hybrid trees as the deer browse and rub the hell out of them right next to the blind.
