Source for Pecans

I'm looking to add a few pecan trees to the farm for personal use. Anybody have a good place to buy seedlings?
Thanks

Any chance your state nursery sells them in small quantities?
Musser Forest used to sell them in small pots. 5 or 6 bucks each. I bought one many years ago and it did great.

I would look into a couple of papershell varieties also. We have a bunch of natives and the hey are great but I would love to get my hands on Missouri papershells. Great flavor and easier to work with. I've seen the nuts bring considerably more money around here from people that sell them. I believe Missouri state nursery sells regular natives bareroot.

U want paper shells eventually? If so you can go with a young container tree to plant and then graft in a few years, or you can buy already grafted trees that are older. I need to do some looking but I'll find some nurseries for you. What state are you in?

I have bought native pecans from the MO state nursery. Not sure if they have them every year or not. If you want some quality grafted trees look up Bass Pecan in South Mississippi. I bought several trees form them last year. Quality trees and good prices.

DrDirtNap,

Do you believe deer feed on your Pecan Trees? I am located in north Middle Tennessee and everyone here says nothing beats the squirrels to the pecans. It is for that reason I have not spent a penny on a pecan tree at this point.

What can you share based on your experience.

Texas based nursery. They will be able to tell you what would work best in VA. You are borderline too far north but it should work. Technically so am I NE Ok but I think VA and OK have similar climates most of the year. There are probably plenty of pecan nurseries closer to you, GA and AL both should have some good options.

None of my pecan trees are bearing yet so I don't have any personal experience to draw from. Some say deer do feed on pecans others say they do not.

@wpdeer. We are bordered by pecan orchards to our east, probably a thousand acres or so. We really are in the heart of pecan country down here. There are probably 10k++ acres of pecans within 20 miles of me. I've hunted pecan orchards on several occasions and I'd say the deer, around here at least, will not eat a pecan. What they DO eat is the clover cover crops the pecan farms plant under their trees. Usually crimson clover but there are always white clovers around too. Late season down here the pecans are good place to hunt, pretty much a thousand acre clover food plot. The deer are generally nocturnal at that point though.

I have hundreds of pecan trees with at least 25 trees over 50 years old. Millions of pecans every year. I have never seen a deer eat a pecan.
