Our special doe gun season has been going on a couple weeks and ends tomorrow. I decided it was time to take a doe this evening but I always like a challenge so I grabbed my S&W Model 629 .44 mag because I have never gotten a handgun deer. It worked out...

Congrats on the handgun kill. My first handgun buck was with the same gun except it was nickel plated like a pimp’s gun. 
Back then, I could manage with iron sights, now past 25 yards or so, I need a little help. The top one is a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter. The bottom one is a Freedom Arms model 83. No scope or red dot for it yet, still mulling it over.

No scope or red dot for it yet, still mulling it over.That’s cool. I shot a groundhog once at about 35 yards with my .41 rem mag with a 3.5” barrel. Luckiest shot ever. I’m all over the place on a target at 30. Always wanted to shoot a deer with a handgun. That’s awesome.

A few almost live from the stand over the last three days. This was my daughters first hunt in the drivers seat.
New Years morning we not only saw zero deer again, we also had a very large black bear at ~40 yards!! One of the coolest encounters I’ve had in a long time. We had a very exciting few moments in the blind and long story short I couldn’t get her lined up on the bear in time.
My daughter opted out of the evening hunt, there was NO WAY I was going to miss it so I recruited my son. This was his first hunt and although he’s shot rimfire rifles a few times he is not ready for a deer rifle. He took a few dry fire shots in the blind for experience.
We had a doe come in after about an hour in the blind. I let him make the call and of course he wanted me to shoot her. I haven’t shot an animal with a rifle in 16 years but there was no way I would miss this opportunity with my son. 20 yard shot with my wife’s.243, too bad I left the bow at home!

High at our property yesterday (last day of season) 70F, high today 54F, high tomorrow 29F!!! With 4 inches of snow predicted. They’re even forecasting snow for us in VA Beach tomorrow.

I’m sure those of you who have property damaged by pigs truly hate them. A small part of me wishes we had the additional hunting opportunities they provide locally (I hunt them every year when I’m in TX on our annual brothers/nephews hunting trip. I also enjoy eating them…. For good or bad, they would not survive our typical winters 3-4’ of snow on the ground.

Be careful what you wish for !
A lot of guys felt that way here 15/20 years ago. Now that they outnumber the deer and screw up everything in sight not so many feel that way. It’s too late now unless those Aggies figure out a way to poison them and not hurt any other animals. They are even a problem inside the city limits in most small towns where I live. It’s not unheard of to see where they’ve rooted up yards, cemeteries, golf courses, etc. They are a damn plague here and no matter how many we kill they just keep breeding like rats.FL Plotter

Got my wife to rush the editing of this video to get it published while folks are still hunting! Nothing harvested but some great deer behavior footage. Enjoy the video....it's more exciting than me typing what happened!

Yep - Remember 20 years ago seeing my first tree with pig mud rubbed on it and thought how cool it would be to see a few on the hoof. We shoot dozens each year...perhaps up to a 100 on 287 acres. They just keep on breeding. 7 shot in the past week. Seriously despise the critters but like yotes, they are here to stay. If you don't have them you are blessed.Be careful what you wish for !

Had a great Florida hunt yesterday. Saw 14 deer and 14 turkeys. Had some great chasing and a couple racked bucks but nothing I was after. Pictures and some short video clips posted on Instagram....it's easier that way.

Finally took a doe on the last day of the extended antlerless season, and got some good meat in the freezer. 27 yards with a 308 loaded with 152 Hammer Hunters and she didn't take a single step. Very thankful for a quick clean kill.
