Live from the stand 2021

Yesterday evening hunt ended up only seeing 2 does and a spike who was being a PITA to them. Soon as I walked in the door I loaded my gear in the pickup, kissed the Mrs goodbye and headed down here to the deer lease. When I arrived I saw that one of the lease guys had a fine 8 point hanging from the meat pole and he had a story that it was the only deer he saw and it was just wandering. I got the camper warmed up and hit the hay.

Weather was calling for a SE wind, I am halfway up a mountain and the currents are overcoming any breeze that might happen so my scent is going right up the mountain from W to E which is absolutely not ideal. Just after first light I had a nice 9 point I estimated at 3.5 walk straight up behind my tree and then attempt to pass the tree on my left at less than 10 yards. I froze with my head facing the line he would walk into and we were eyeball to eyeball...luckily he wasn’t what I was looking for and he didn’t like the blob in the tree either so he turned tail and went back from whence he came...
I saw another good buck a few minutes later through the brush to the NE but he had a destination in mind and my grunt was to no avail so I am just waiting it out now...

No way.

Lol. Way! And yes I used your amazing knife as usual. I’ve got some knives I’ve loved, several going back decades ,but yours is the best and my fav. Wish you still did them as I need more to give for Christmas again.

Took my girls out to a friend's ranch by Stephenville and my 13 year old connected on this management buck Saturday morning.

Way, well then, congratulations. Men being visual creatures still need to see pictures. I still haven't made a penny as a gigolo so making knives for $5/hour may be in my future.

Pic was posted as promised yesterday for your visual pleasure.
And I’d rather not have that visual image of you as a gigolo. That would take years of therapy for my overcoming even if I do wish you success at your endeavor.

I see, I'm satisfied, beautiful buck. Ya I'm starting to doubt too, but I did almost sell $100 worth of maple slabs last week.

Thanksgiving morning shirt tail cutting was in order for me...I had a buck come in on me in the predawn and as bad as my eyes are getting in low light conditions I couldn’t confirm who it was. Even through the rifle scope I kept coming up with a short G3 and wasn’t putting it together what deer I was looking at. Wind was about 15-20 MPH from the north and every time I looked north my eyes would water in the low 30’s temps. I was hoping the deer would hang around long enough for a positive ID but as most all big bucks do he started leaving just as it was getting light enough to see and his 20” width gave him away but he had broken his G3 fighting and is why I had no idea what I was looking at. He was on the short list of deer I would end my season on but he was right on the edge being 4.5 years old. I shouldered the 30-30 Marlin and tried for a quartering away 60 yard shot from the swaying tree offhand and at the shot he ran about 50 yards...stopped...trotted 20 more yards...stopped...then walked down into the creek bottom. I just knew he was mine so I settled back awaiting more light and to give him time to expire. About 20 minutes later I saw something else passing through the woods at about 80 yards and I put the scope on it and saw it was #1 and I had him broadside at 80 and stopped for about 30 seconds but I had just shot my season ended deer so I just watched him walk away. A few minutes later I got down and walked to where the deer I shot had been standing and I saw dirt sprayed on top of the leaves in the direction he was headed so I made note and started along the path he took and absolutely had no blood whatsoever. I followed the path about 200 yards looking and determined I needed to go back to the start. The dirt on the leaves had me study further and I finally realized it was the bullet impact on the ground that caused it...long story short...complete miss...

Happens to all of us Johnny! At least you’re not experiencing the dull disappointment of knowing you’re done for the year…. I expect we’ll see one of your OK brutes on the ground before long.

Opening rifle today in Florida. In stand by 0530, can shoot at 0545, 0600 six does come in. 0630, 5 does leave. Home in time for nap before cooking Thanksgiving dinner. The dark trail in the picture is from the point of impact to her final resting place.

Had a nice doe walk out. Put the pin her and squeezed the release. And she jumped the arrow. Tuft of white fur and nothing else.

When they react to the bow it’s typically in the form of dropping down. But, white hair is belly hair. Could you see your arrow impact?
