The Massey

I leave Thursday for my first out of state hunt. I'm headed to NC Nebraska on a minister's retreat hunt with a good buddy who has been supporter of, and guide for Pastors In The Outdoors for several years now. If I have signal up there, I'll try to update a little on the live from the stand thread. I'm very excited for this trip, we'll be hunting a 15,000 acre ranch, and there will only be 7 of us hunting.

That sounds like a great trip. Good luck!

Well, I just got back from NE last night. It was an amazing trip to the boondocks, I had NO service whatsoever. I have to admit, it was really nice to unplug for a few days completely. The staff knew how to spoil you, and I came home absolutely encouraged and refreshed as a preacher. I'll try to get some pics/video uploaded sometime soon. I saw a lot of deer and had some nice 3 year old bucks in range. I saw one true shooter, but he never got closer than 100 yards and was with an early doe. One of the 3 year olds was really tempting, but some of the preachers that come into camp have never had an opportunity at a pope and young buck, I'd love to hear that someone tagged him later on this year or next, when he could really turn into a stud. On a sidenote, some of my hunting buddies from church got together and purchased me an Ozonics for minster's appreciation, and for the trip. I was shocked! I was also very pleasantly surprised to see that those things actually work! It saved my bacon a few times when does and bucks got downwind.

The videos were too big to upload. Here’s a few pics from the trip…

Brings back memories. I hunted the KS/NE for nearly 10 years. Beautiful country up there
Thanks for sharing the pics. I always loved the big bodies, especially coming from TX

My pleasure! It was some diverse, rugged country for sure. I've never hunted stands within a couple miles of each other that had such different looking surroundings, from hardwood ridges and draws, to sand hills and short grass prairie. I saw the first prairie chickens I've seen in years. I sincerely hope to return one day.

Rattled in a nice young 8 yesterday morning. The young bucks are coming to the horns real well right now. I’m planning to leave work a little early tomorrow and hunt some public ground about 40 minutes away tomorrow evening. Here’s a pic of yesterday’s buck…

Hung a set on the Massey today. For years I’ve thought about hanging a stand in a 4 or 5 acre oak flat neighboring the property to the east. I’ve stayed out fearing running deer over onto the neighbor’s crop field and into the laps of the many hunters over there. I finally decided this was silly, it isn’t security cover, it’s pretty open hardwoods. It divides the actual security cover on us and the property line to the east. I’ll prolly only hunt it once or twice all season, and only on a light wind morning when the thermals are working. This is the off-year for the red oaks, so traffic will be slower this year I’m betting; but in the very least, I’ll be able to keep a better eye on the neighbors when I’m in the stand. Here’s a few pics, I’ll try a pan shot, not sure if it will load on here.

I plan to hunt the Massey, for the first time this fall, tomorrow morning. I'll be in the above stand, also a first. You know what they say about the first time in a stand! I'll have the Ozonics crankin' for sure. It continues to impress me as several deer got downwind of me while I was on public ground a couple nights ago, and not one spooked.

I’ve been a little awol lately, I recently got a positive Covid diagnosis. I’m really feeling great, I was able to get the antibody infusion because of my type 1 diabetes. It really does a number on the virus. So, I’ve been spending a lot of my quarantine in a deer stand. I did pic up some cards today and new bucks seem to be showing up almost every other day. Here’s a few pics…

As I can see on the journals, some great bucks are beginning to fall, I’m hoping our crew can join the bbd party soon.

Gonna give the Massey a shot this afternoon, in a tree I haven’t hunted yet this year. I shot a buck out of it in ‘18, maybe another one will mosey by. Wind is gonna be pretty squirrelly and this is one of the few stands I can hunt with either a NW or SW wind.

Saw a few does and 6 young bucks. The mature bucks have gone straight underground.

Same in KY. But if history repeats itself, there should be another flush of activity when the second rut comes in. That will be in a couple of weeks. Good luck.

Went and hunted some new-to-me public this evening. Even with the warm temps and getting in late (hang and hunt), I saw good movement, a couple does and two small cruising bucks. I decided to leave my gear in the tree and hunt the morning and work late tomorrow, I have reasonably high hopes of seeing some good movement in the morning. If I manage to get one shot, it will be a vacation day for sure, this spot is in the sticks!

Found out yesterday the main buck we were hunting by our old home place got shot a couple weeks ago by a neighbor. Kinda stinks wasting time hunting a dead buck.

Audrey and I went over to little house yesterday evening. She was toting the rifle and I had my bow. We were after two bucks, if the eight came out she was up and if the nine showed up it was my turn. Well, the nine did show up and stayed just out of range for 35 minutes until legal light was gone, then he proceeded to come in to 18 yards. Oh well, maybe next time.
Here he was taunting me:
