Live from the stand 2021

Nice, I was wondering if you were hunting. I’m in Myrtle Beach for a wedding, nice and cool for the low country this evening.

Only saw a couple of deer but it was a nice evening in the stand. Was crazy windy at first but died down.

We are ML hunting tomorrow morning. I like our forecasted wind of 12 mph for two reasons. First, it is enough to drown our sound at least some while entering through a bean field. Second, it will be taking our scent to the south over a bluff and not into the areas we expect deer.

This weekend is the rock bottom of the yearly October lull during archery season for deer in Pennsylvania, due to hunting pressure, acorns falling, warm weather, no rut, and the wrong moon, which means that there is no worse time to go hunting, so if you are out hunting deer in PA this weekend it means that you are one of the following:
#1. Stupid.
#2. You're hunting overpopulated Stupid deer.
#3. You always hunt every day of the season no matter what.
#4. You're desperately trying to get away from something worse.
#5. You're a diehard who just doesn't give a deers butt.
#6. You're a greenhorn who hasn't figured this out already. So congratulations if you are #6, you are out in your stand & well on the way to figuring this out for yourself, which is of course the only way that you will believe it.
I personally am probably #5.

I’m number 7. Super busy with 3 kids and this is my first chance to hunt. Also I’m heading to Alaska in 2 weeks so this may be my only chance to sit on our place for deer before rifle season.

Grandson and I headed to stand in a couple of minutes. 2nd day of youth rifle. We saw 5 bucks and 2 does yesterday morning and 2 were nice but he held off. No hunt yesterday afternoon as I had to host our church group. 39 degrees right now and little to no wind out of the north. South plot...

I never heard of the October Lull until the Druy's started to talk about it some years ago.

As a younger man I used to hunt the Archery in Pa pretty much whenever I could and usually seen Deer almost every sit, so never was concerned about a Lull. The Patterns have changed by this time of year and the Bucks flowing out like water into the Ag Fields and running in Packs is over and the Woods Hunts have begun.

Now I would focus on hunting the Returning Draws from the Ag Fields that they use to head back into the Bedding Areas for Morning Hunts, and in the Evening I would spend more time hunting the Oak Flats with dropping Acorns, White Oak if possible, in the late Afternoon into Evening.

Spending time in the Stand near the Ag Fields now would usually produce seeing the Does heading out early and some Young Bucks, but the Old Boys wouldn't filter by until it was to dark to shoot. I remember one evening I was hunting a Draw and Funnel and all the above had happened, then came the sound of the Plop Plop Plop of a Heavy Deer approaching. He walked slowly, majestically up the trail I was watching and stopped a mere 15 Yards from me. I could see his Huge Body and the faint outline of his Rack in the oncoming Twilight as he stood and surveyed the area. He seemed to sense my presence but wasn't sure exactly where I was. I could only stand stock still to watch him (way to dark to even think of a shot) and enjoy the moment of the Encounter that I can still see in my Mind's Eye these 30 some years later.

He slowly walked off with that same Plop Plop Plop sound that a real Bull of the Woods has earned by being the King of his Area.

I never saw him again.

But it taught me that the Deeper into the woods from the Fields this time of year I would go, the better the chance of seeing a Stud like him in daylight would be.

And always remember this fact: They (the Deer) don't read the same books we do nor watch the same Experts on TV, so they do whatever it is they want to do at any time and any place. So the Absolute Best Time to be in the Woods is quite simply Any Time You Can.

I don’t think I’ve ever been more screwed by the wind than I was this morning. The expected cool front came through overnight and we went from 88 degrees yesterday to 55 degrees this morning. Supposed to be perfect N/NW wind until I get in the stand and it’s inexplicably blowing from the East. I heard a buck grunt early then that was replaced by lots of deer blowing. So far I’ve had deer blow at me from 4 different directions. Lame.

The temp change this morning was crazy. Good luck out there I'll get my chance next weekend.
