The Massey

Got the last two of the main plots done today. I’ll have a couple very small “poor man’s” plots to do once the rain comes — looking hopeful this week! Here’s a few pics from the day. As you will be able to tell, it’s just a little dry this way. Because 99%of the established clover is dormant, I didn’t have a lot of cover to lay down.
Then before pic…

Spot #2 was also pretty dried up, I did put part of the plot conventional tilling last fall with cereals and clover. You can see that part is still green even with the mini drought we’re in, Paul Knox would be proud, as you all know, he always said clover out of fall winter rye can withstand about anything the following year.

Now come on rain!
I did pick up a couple cards, but haven’t had a chance to check them yet.

Just like clockwork, the bucks show up by our old home place. Not a buck picture all summer and then September rolls around and here they come. Hopefully, with a little rain and a revived plot, more will be coming.
Several have showed up but this one is the most interesting…

Going to get a small t&m in this evening before the possible rain coming. It's been a while since I've gotten this excited about a weather report. It could do wonders for the plots planted in the last week.

I'm super excited about this report too. Even though our chances of rain are lower than your's it will be nice to cool off some and maybe have some cloud cover.

I’m right there with you. I went ahead and overseeded some additional Elbon rye on my plots Sunday. Haven’t had any rain in weeks since planting. Forecast looks wet over the next week in SC Oklahoma!

Got the poor man’s plot done last night hoping for rain, which has yet to arrive, but we have a few more chances the next day or two.
At least the drought made it easier to get across the field. Normally I would have had to carry everything or take it in a wagon. The beans are non-existent, so I could take the cart right across the field. This is a bean field believe it or not…

Doing the rabbit poop experiment this year. :D

The chicory from last year is well liked where it survived.

The bean field pic is sad indeed. Shows the devastation. I’m thinking ive lost my ridgetop alfalfa this year from drought. Didn’t think that was possible for that. Good luck on rains.

Same up North. It looked pretty promising, but we got .15". Now they have backed off the forecast for this weekend... :(
The hit and miss nature of Kansas rains this summer/fall has been exceptional it seems. Of course, when it comes to rain, or lack of it, I tend to have a short memory. This why I NEVER complain about it being wet, even when it seems to rain everyday for weeks.

I remember back when I used to wish on every blip on the radar.

Nice buck, looks like a one fiddy to me.

Whereas the Massey didn’t get a lot of rain, some of the plots on other properties received much better precip. The result is looking good. This is the same plot from the top of the page that looked like a barren wasteland a week and a half ago.

The rye and radishes seem to be ahead of everything else right now. I’m sure the wheat will catch up, not sure about the oats, I might be done with them as a throw and mow ingredient.

The third of an inch of rain has had a positive affect at the Massey. Cereal grains and clover simply cannot be matched for resiliency. The forecast is calling for some more rain chances the first of the week. All of the next pics are t&m portions of the plot, except for the brassica portion.
So far, I’m very impressed with t&m into buckwheat.

I’m also a growing fan of chicory in our mix, this is last year’s efforts. You can see the strip of brassicas in the background.

This is 3 year old established clover that had cereals t&med into last fall. That small rain has the clover trying hard to come out of dormancy.

I had the day off, so I decided to head over to the back foodplot at the Massey and get the scrape pole set up. The plot looks really good, and the glorious rain last night will really get it going I’m sure. We already have a lot of daylight pics if deer staging, grabbing a bite or two of greens, and munching on acorns. Speaking of acorns, I thought eastern red oaks only produce every other year. Do some trees pollinate on “off years”? We did have a couple mature bucks moving through some, but the camera didn’t get good pictures of them.
