Got lucky on Sunday with my first bird since 2017. This didn’t come from either of our properties but a couple miles from our river bottom place on a property we’ve hunted turkeys on for 20+ years.

8 3/4”, 5/8”, 23.5 lbs

Came along the fence line about 8:15am with 3 hens. Put on a little display for a few minutes before I took the shot. 40 yards.

Turkey hunting is the best antidote when it's almost a half year until deer season. At 5/8 he was a younger bird, but nice and heavy, should be prime eating. Were you calling or just sitting?

Honestly? Sleeping. :)

I heard gobbling while I walked in (10 minutes late) and realized too late that he was much closer than I originally thought. Said screw it and just kept going to the blind and set the decoys out. I’m guessing he saw me walk in as he shut right up. Never answered my calls. Then after a bit he started gobbling on his own but still wouldn’t answer. This went on until 7am when I heard a couple hens start chirping. He then shut up again and I never heard him gobble again. I shut my eyes at some point and woke up about 8:15am. Look up and here he is with 3 hens right out in front of me. About 40 yards out along the fence. The hens were dusting themselves and he was doing circles for them all fanned out. Watched them for a couple minutes then when they looked like they might move on I took the shot. He had finally cleared a down tree completely and was in the open. I sleep a bunch while turkey hunting. Probably why I don’t get them very often. :)

Nice! I’m a big believer in frost seeding clover.

I’m going to plant part of our field in clover/alfalfa in august but will probably frost seed a little the next spring to ensure a nice thick stand. The pic above was brassicas last fall. I threw a little clover down with the brassicas but didn’t see much of it as the brassicas came in pretty thick.

Clover in the field plot looking good. Gonna hurt to till it up in July/august.

Clover in the west plot lush. More weeds than I’d like but deer don’t seem to mind.

Need some rain though or it’s going to dry out soon.

What type of clover, and why plow it up?

I frost seeded medium red this spring. I threw I don’t know what kind down last fall. So it’s a combination for sure. This clover is on the south half of our field where I have a stand and a blind. I want to establish perennial clover on the north half where I planted some crab apples this spring. I want the annual cereals/brassicas closer to the hunting opportunities because they’ll last longer into the fall. The deer hammered the plot last fall. All the way through gun season. Basically the LickCreek mix for the entire plot (about 1 acre). Probably split it into thirds though. That way it’s a year round food source or at least as close as I can get it.

Stuff taking off with some rain and warm weather.

Game bird mix from Deer Creek Seed.
