Awnless wheat heads

Deer were in mine constantly for several weeks. All gone now. Wish I could post pics.

Maybe it’s something they have to figure out. I didn’t order any this year. Deer creek didn’t have any in stock when I tried to buy some. So I ordered regular WW from my local COOP.

Deer ate every seed head off every plant in every field I have shortly after hardening. April??? Planting at 50 lbs/acre and probably around 100 acres regular wheat not awnless. Modest deer population but herd very familiar with wheat so they know what to look for.

This field I did 100 lbs of awnless and 50 pounds of oats last fall.

I have a nice stand to broadcast into for a throw and mow. I was just hoping the deer would figure out the heads.

they sure figured out the buckwheat though. They won’t let that grow.

That ain't awnless fella. Where you are, they should be long gone by now. Dude in central MN had his get taken this past week already.

This is awnless. No hairs (awns).

I ordered my seed from deer creek seed. It was labeled awnless wheat. I couldn’t get awnless local, I’m in PA. That’s very unfortunate the bag was mislabeled.

Well I’ll give it another shot this year, but from Green Cover Seed. The shipping is expensive but what the heck.

As long as we don’t have 4 feet of deep snow again the deer should have plenty of winter feed. I have 300 pounds of winter rye, 100 pounds of winter wheat and 100 pounds of awnless winter wheat to overseed my plots with this year.

The awnless variety our coop gets is called Kinggrazer. I was the first to order it a couple years ago, after taking Cat’s advice. Now our coop gets several pallets of it a year, I guess I’m a trendsetter here. Lol!!

I wish there were more than a few of us every 50 miles. It wouldn't take more than a few guys to pool an order and up it to a pallet rate. Everyone could save a pile and get what they want. I've given up trying to find others anywhere in my flight path.

You don't have to order a full pallet. When I ordered, I priced 1500 and 2000 lb. It was only about $2/bag more to ship the 1500lb pallet. I probably should have done that, since I still have 8 bags left. Worst case, I'll use it next year.

My deer could care less if it has hairs or not. They eat the crap out of it as soon as it's ripe.

I looked again today and I found it mixed in with the rye. I thought I did a field by itself, but I guess I broadcasted it throughout both fields. The deer haven’t touched it though.

Oh cool!

The first crop I got it to grow, my deer didn't eat it until way late. I was really let down, but they came around and finally took it in late August or even September. My buddy just a little ways south of me has really high deer densities, and his got taken in about 3 days in early July.

Awnless is triticale. Deer out west won't eat awn wheat. I believe the hairs get stuck between their tooth and gum causing irritation.
The stuff I've been getting is an awnless wheat, but now that you mention it I might give triticale a try. Maybe plant a strip of it to see what the deer think of it.
