Sorry to see someone shipping out trees like that. I'm happy with trees from Blue Hill Wildlife Nursery, Cummins, Turkey Creek and Whitetail Crabs. The trees you were sent should have been priced as culls. I hope they are able to grow new roots for you Mennoniteman. And thanks for posting what that company sent you.Ok, I got what I asked for. There's barely any root on them, they are cut off about 5 inches deep. I planted four right away and am going to plant the other six on Tuesday. I'll be surprised if they all grow...

Were they dry when you got them? Those look cut off pretty bad, but I've had a few like that & they lived fine. I got my 25 tree order from TWG & there were 2 trees that weren't tagged at all & 2 other trees that I didn't order shipped to me instead of what I ordered. I had a few that actually look worse than your pic
Fingers crossed they pull through OK but I'm disappointed in the 4. With that being said, the box they shipped them in was great & they stayed plenty wet plus the roots on 95% of them are SUPER!
What's you all's expectation when ordering seedlings? Should they be guaranteed to leaf out? I ordered ten hybrid oaks from Nativ and a dozen 1.5 year old persimmons from Chestnut hill. They all looked good, but two from each nursery never leafed out, and are definitely dead.

Last year I bought 7 pawpaws from an obscure nursery through a friend, none of them ever even got a bud. And since the order was through a friend I had little recourse to ask for restitution. I suppose it's how life teaches us its many lessons.

Well, I bought ten Keiffer Pear trees from Willis Orchards and they didn't look like they were dug deep enough, a lot of roots were cut off. But evidently they know what they are doing better than I do, because all ten leafed out right away, and they are growing fast. The one in the picture is the smallest one, and it's growing well. Thumbs up to Willis Orchards.

I ordered some Gillet chestnut trees and a few pieces of graft wood from Washington Chestnut the last two years. The graft wood has done okay. All but one of the trees have died. All of last em years trees died and I thought it was my fault for not watering. The one that died this year put out one or two initial leaves, set there for several weeks, then finally the leaves turned brown and I think the tree died. I took pics and will be contacting them to see what they are willing to do about possible replacement. Doubt I will order from them again. I realize they are in a totally different geographical location than I am and that may be playing a part in my troubles but it’s hard to find nurseries in my area that sell chestnut trees.

I have been very impressed with the trees we planted from Northern Whitetail crabs last spring. The pears we got from Wildlife Group this spring looked good too. Just like I was worried about, the faucet shut off and and good chances for rain in the foreseeable future don't look good; so I might be getting a lot of good looks at the trees this summer when watering them.
I think TX is too hot and dry for most Chestnuts. Maybe investigate what varieties they grew on some of the CA missions that have them. They also like acidic soil. Not sure what you have down there.
I've lost 4 out of 25 from TWG so far this Spring, not very good odds considering the odds I've had the prev 3 years from other companies. Overall not terribly happy w/ the order, considering the % lost plus a few unmarked bare root trees & a couple trees that were substituted w/o letting me know. I e-mailed them a few weeks ago & haven't heard back...

Have plenty of Chestnuts growing so not a issue. Now it could be a issue with this particular variety. I’ve also become quite adept at amending soil.
