New Heritage HC

Back home. Didn’t see a single deer on this trip.

Got pics of this guy the first ever for us. Tipped over a feeder, climbed into the stand and broke open the blind door to get inside. Knocked over the chair.

Well I think we now have locals sneaking in to hunt. Can’t prove it yet but:

Camera on my best Food Plot had Zero Pic Files when pulled yesterday evening. Usually has the most pics of any spot.

Today the SIL is in the stand/blind that looks over same plot and says the one arm on the brand new chair I put in there is bent way over. Wasn’t like that before.

At my Ladder Stand this morning the pull-up rope was around the strap that holds the legs to the tree not on the ladder itself where I always put it.

Lastly the Tripod Stand (which you can see from the road if you look) usually produces deer every year. This year none. Corn is not even being eaten.

Shit you got to deal with when you live 5-6 hrs away.

Yesterday I had an opportunity to take a Doe and I blew it. Was looking over the two bucks with her and she left.

Came back and started to leave again. I rushed the shot and hit her forwards of where I should have.

Had a Tracker come out to make sure and as I thought it was a brisket hit not vitals.

Dogs ran right to her bed then chased her out 875 yards when we called it.

She’ll live.

Sitting in an all day rain at the new KZ Stand.
Camera shows the Bear came back the next day after I set the Feeder back up and stayed until it ate all the corn.

No more corn for it. So far I have not seen a deer but did have a scary deal happen when I got up into the stand.

Left the bolt in when I tied it to the rope. Usually open it if it’s loaded. I keep it barrel down and that was a good thing

Felt it catch on something while bringing it up. Couldn’t get it free. Shined a light to see it was caught on a cross brace.

Which moved the Safety to Fire.

When I grab be the stock to pull the gun in I must of touched the trigger and it went off. Missed my foot by 2” or less.

Scared me big time.

Never will I lower or raise one without the bolt open again.

Pics from around the stand.

Well I guess that blind in the KZ Stand was just doomed. Haha. The Wind got to it over the weekend and tore it up good.

Was planning to replace it with wood sides anyway.

I went up for a final hunt on the next to last weekend. Glad I did.

Sat all day Friday in one stand and saw nothing. Rain moved in and stayed until 9:00 the next morning.

After the rain I decided to try a new spot in the swamp. Trouble was the wind was all wrong to get to it but it would be fine once I was there.

As I slipped down the trail I felt the wind hit me in the back of the neck and a snort followed right after. A Deer in the thick stuff in the edge of the Swamp had busted me. Eventually it splashed off into the Swamp and I kept going.

As I neared the trail into the Swamp Stand a Deer stepped into view. It was a Buck and a Legal Buck too.

We were about 30-40 yards apart but brush was between us. It was the first legal Buck I had seen and decided to take the shot before he smelt me.

Shot and the deer just turned and ran back the way he came. Walked to where he was standing and nothing. Looked back to where I had shot from and found two twigs I shot clear through.

That had me worried.

I started down the trail and found a spot of blood. And that’s how it went a spot here then a spot there. Couple of times it looked like he had started into the Swamp but came back out and kept on the trail.

Eventually I saw him laying ahead.

He was a 6-point with a broken main beam to be a 5. I had pics of him during the summer.

Not a monster but much bigger than my Buck from the property last year. Much heavier too. At least 150 lbs.

Some pics of him and him on the Deer Cart I made to pull behind the 4-wheeler.

I am not able to upload the video of after skinning. It was amazing to see the damage done by the shot.

I was using a .243 and I think after breaking those sticks it started to tumble. Both Entry and Exit holes were oblong. Looked like multiple hits as well. Maybe the bullet had fragmented.

Great hunt Deadeye. Looks little soggy where he lay. I didn't know anyone still drug out a deer anymore, since they all seem to either drive a truck or S/S to the stand and deer. Congrats.

The is a Cypress Swamp that run through our place. With the rains we have had the last two weeks and actually had it rain from 6:00 pm to 9:00 am and rain hard at times then night/morning. That day the water in the Swamp had raised to the point it was overflowing onto the bottom land.

Where the Buck lay is an old trail that ran the swamp edge. I had walked into the swamp at one point following the trail and it was calf deep immediately.

So the short answer is the water levels there go up and down with the rain.

That Cart is a hand drag cart that I modified with a tongue so I could hook it to my 4-wheeler. It’s pulled out 3 Deer, moved Feeders, and Stands so far.

It's that time of year again, Round 4.

SIL found a great deal on Muddy 3-Man Blinds at Sam's Club for $100, so we bought two to replace the old ones.

I'm heading up soon to switch out the Blinds, Move the Tripod to a new spot I found In Season that has a real nice Scrape Line of 4 Scrapes within a 200 yard Trail. Going to set up the Tripod on it. Then set up a 2-man Ladder Stand that I took down last year and brought home to re-do. For it I found another Scrape Line that follows through a Upland Thicket and on top of the small Ridge is a Mature Oak Flat and Persimmon Trees. I plan to find the Right Tree for it where I can see into the Bottom Thicket and also see the Flat on Top.

If I get that all done in a day and a half, then I plan to take the Feeder Barrels off of the Boxes and set them on the Ground and held in place with 2-Ratchet Straps onto Trees or Posts. The Open Tray allowed for way to many Coons to be on there feeding at one time and they could clean out a 55-Gallon Drum of Corn in a week. I seen Pics of others using the Set On Ground method both for the Coons and for stopping the Bears from knocking them over and cleaning them out.

The Box Trays I'll bring home and use for Raised Bed Gardens, so no loss there.

Watching the Grandsons 3-Days a week now M-T-W, then Mowing Lawns on Thursday has kept me hopping this year. Still don't have a Camper, but the SIL bought a real nice Used one for a great price. So when he goes up we will have that.

This Thread has been awesome to look back on and read over to see where we were and were we are now.

Didn't get everything done in the One Trip, so went back up this weekend to finish. Set Roofs over the Tripod and Ladder Stand, moved the last Feeder Barrel and put the corn in.

Checked the Cams I had set out last month and was surprised to find More Deer using the Top Side of the Big Oak Stand instead of the Bottom, so I put the last Feeder there.

Had a handful of Does and a few Bucks. Mostly Spikes (seems the norm each year) and one decent Rack Buck. No Monsters.
Did have a Pregnant Doe on one cam in late August. That is late for even our place. I saw a Spotted Fawn this trip which didn't surprise me but that Pregnant Doe sure did. She must not of got Bred until late March.

It's been real hard to figure the Rut out on this place. There have been years where I have got pics of Bucks running around in full daylight in December, January, February and even March. I've seen Bucks with Does around Thanksgiving during the Buck/Doe Day Weekend.

Keeps me working in it.

Well It's Finally Come!

Leaving in a few hours for the NHHC. Looks like I got to dodge some Storms on the way there, but all clear once I get there.

I am moving the Camp from where we have always had it, to the Front Right Corner of the Property. Two-Three Main Reasons.

One, we have learned that there is a Major Deer Trail that runs Right Through our Camp and the Two New Stands I have set that are watching over Scrape Lines are BOTH on that Trail Line. Us being there has to mess up their travel.

Two, the SIL bought a nice used Camper it is big enough that there is No Way he is going to be able to back it down the trail to where the Old Camp sat. There is a nice Road that runs down the Property Edge on the North Right Corner to back down and right into our Property. And we get along EXCELLENT with the Neighbor on that side.

Three, Although the First Year we got the most Deer Pics on Cams set in that Area since then they have dropped way off. We have to drive past there to get to Our Gate for the Trail that runs down the Center where the Old Camp lies. AND since the Neighbors to the North across that road have decided to start hunting there and they have messed that area all up now. First year the one guy sat in his Truck looking right down the Road to shoot what crossed it and last year set up a Blind near it and their travel in and out cause our Deer to have changed completely.

So moving it makes it easier to get into and opens up a better hunt opportunity, so Double Good Move.

I got a new Truck Tent that actually sets in the Truck Bed and up off of the Ground, so a little more safer than it has been with Whatever it is that Walks around the old tent at night and sniffs at Me in it. LOL. Once I get it set up I'll take Pics and Share.

Got Camp set up last night but to late to head out.

Went to a stand I had a feeling they would be working the feeder at and looks like I was right.

Just not today.

That big storm rolled through here yesterday and today the hard winds followed.

Yesterday at Noon there were two legal Bucks eating at the Feeder. And a Week ago yesterday the two Biggest of the 7 that the cam showed me were there at 6:00 pm.

One Spike, and a few Scrubby Legals for the most part but one was a 4-point on one side and a 2-point that tried to split into a 3 on the other. That is a Trait Here. And also in Lower South Alabama I found out on a Hunting Show filmed there.

Last year my Tracker got the Big 4 x 1 that was all over my place. Huge 4 on one side and a Huge Dagger on the other.

Best Buck was a 3-year old 7-point. Nice size for his age.

Been awhile since we had multiple Bucks working the Property.

Camp as it now is.

Needs cleaned up a bit and grass mowed but that will wait for next year now.

Me in the Tree and the Area those Bucks (and a pile of Doe) pics taken.

I let two small but legal Bucks have a pass.

Almost shot this one thinking it was a Big Lone Doe, until it turned its head right and I saw it was a Button Buck.

Then he came back just before dark and I almost took him again until I seen the Buttons.

Give it a go again in a couple of weeks.

Heading back up this morning for a several day Hunt. Last chance for Archery/Crossbow for me.

Thanksgiving Weekend the SIL and I plan to head up to hunt during the Bucks-Does Weekend with Rifle.

Last year I ended up taking the 2nd biggest I had on cams from that stand on his way to the Feeder with another buck. The Cams showed that the Big 7 and Another Wide 6 Showed up after, but I never did see either.

My Plans to re-work things up there got messed up good this year between Babysitting (that is done, I said no more) and not one but two Hurricanes on weeks I planned to go and worse of all Wife's Motorcycle Wreck that still has her working hard to recover from.

At this point I may not even get a chance to go up at all this year, but will hit it in the Spring for some Planting.

Glad I started this back when, gives me a chance to re-look and re-learn from the notes I made.
