Unproductive Sawtooth Oaks

Looks to me that there is way too much competition around those sawtooths. They grew straight up like pine trees.

Cut all that crap down around them - release them like apple trees. They like full sun, and I guarantee they aren’t getting that right now.

Definitely need to clean up around those Sawtooth Trees. I think that would help, but wouldn’t they still make some fruit even though they may be a little crowded? Our climate has been a lot warmer the past several years with late freezes coming in March. I just wonder if that is also causing an issue

They all still produce and all of them look like that now. However, I get about half the quantity due to having half the limbs I used to have. It stinks but I’m having bear meatballs on Friday.

I have a line of Sawtooths 20 years old that produce like crazy. They get absolutely full sun. 20 feet away from the last tree in the line there are 4 more sawtooths that are also 20 years old. These 4 are stuck between pine trees and a huge live oak - they get very little sun. The group of 4 have never produced a nut.

This is what a 10 to 12 year old sawtooth planted correctly should look like. This one is loaded every year. And has been since it was 5.

Wow, that is substantial evidence that full sun very well could be the reason they won’t produce! Time for a timber thinning

This is why I’m very skeptical of the “invasive species” label these tree have. They don’t do well at all unless in full sun. Everywhere I have a small seedlings is shaded. They’re gone after a couple of years. Those that do make it to maturity won’t fruit except on the very crown of the tree. They literally need to be planted in a pasture or field or front yard to produce a substantial acorn crop.

The trees circled in blue produce acorns like you wouldn’t believe. The four trees circled in red do not produce acorns. All of them were planted in 2000.

One on left gets little sun due to large paper mulberry. They gradually get bigger and fuller as they get more and more sun. Same ground same age same soil. Only difference is sunlight

No doubt! How old are your Sawtooth? I was excited when I had planted these trees 15 years ago. Played in my head many times, trees loaded with large, sweet acorns raining down while I sit on a tree stand. Year 10 had me scratching my head. The next year, the same. Now, I just marvel at the trees growth. Still holding out hope that one day they will start producing bumper crops. But it does go to show that nothing is guaranteed and just because one tree produces at 8 years, different trees, different growing conditions, climate all have a say

My best trees are roughly 5 and 6 feet tall...planted spring of 2017. Not all have done this well, but those I have taken the best care of have responded well thus far.

I’m gonna throw a wrench into the full sun thing. I have some in full sun. Good soil. On the edge of a food plot. Eight-Nine years old. Never produced a acorn. Ever. No doubt full sun plays a part but I have something else going on. I keep saying maybe next year. Then next year turns into next and the next...
