"Whitetail Hollow" - 90 Acres NE Oklahoma.

My dad purchased a jersey calf last fall. He grassed him this summer and called several local lockers to book him to butcher. First available appointment is next May...

Tomorrow is youth rifle season and the grandsons were out of school today so we did some getting ready stuff over on Home 30...this first double ladder we had to pull a section off of it so it would fit the tree. No worries though because it is up on top of a hill looking down into the woods line.

We then went down the hill to the woods line and put up a bow/muzzleloader stand...these 2 stands are some of the ones I took down off our old lease that I gave up for this year...

Then we did a little shooting to make sure Eli was still on.

I then grabbed my truck gun out and fired a couple downrange...

Our target...my 2 shots are upper right and all the rest are Eli’s. 50 yards...

We finished off by going to our favorite Mexican Restaurant.

Eli and I are going to try the Hollow in the morning with the favorable wind we have and probably try Home 30 either Saturday evening or Sunday.

Rookie mistake this morning. Thought alarm was set. Woke up a bit and thought it looks a bit lighter outside. Looked at clock 6:50 am. Oh crap, wake Eli, throw clothes on and run out the door...get to near South Plot at 7:10 and 2 bucks in plot spotted us walking down the woods road and ran across in front of us down into the creek bottom. 1 was the target buck...we got in the blind anyway and haven’t seen a thing nor have we heard any shots...

Oh man that sucks!

I've done it too or slept through or past the alarm. It is what it is.

A little late with this but here goes...on Friday afternoon we had a SW wind so I knew that with that wind direction there was nothing for it but for Eli and myself to go over to our other Property at Home 30... we climbed into this short by one ladder section double ladder stand.

This stand sits up on a hill looking down into a lower draw so it is plenty tall on that standpoint but if a deer comes from the other side of that tree they are almost eye level...10 minutes into the sit that is exactly what one did...directly downwind and got nervous and left...no shot for Eli the lefty since it was on our left. We sat about another 30 minutes and that doe went around us and came from the other direction and Eli was able to drop her in her tracks with a shoulder/heart shot...

We got her gutted and took her to a local processor and drove back home. On Saturday we had to be at a town called Marble City for an even called Marble City Mayhem where you enter to drive as fast as you can up a steep hill that originates in the middle of the little town...it is 1/8th mile and steep! Here is a series of photos showing 1 of my runs...traction issues the entire way up. The police car radars you while you are coming up the hill...

When we got done doing that it was about 3:00 and we were 1 1/2 hours from home so we decided we wouldn’t hunt Saturday afternoon and we would chill out at the house. I told Eli that we needed to keep a lookout out the kitchen window in case a buck came up out of the hollow into the backyard...I hadn’t seen any bucks there this fall but had seen lots of does. We were t picky about any bucks and any would do if one popped up. I cooked on the gas grill on the back porch and we just were relaxing a bit and every once in awhile we would look out the window...about 6:15 I saw a doe coming up out of the hollow and a couple minutes later a second deer came up following her...I immediately told Eli to get his shoes on and I grabbed the 30-30 and loaded it and gave it to him and we went out the front door and around the north end of our house so we could use the house as cover and as a rest...when we got around there I could see the doe but the buck was nowhere in sight but we have several scattered trees in the backyard and it faces west which makes it difficult to see well that way in the twilight. I went back in the house and looked to confirm he was still in the backyard. Eventually the doe moved SE into the wood line so I told Eli to get the gun up and rested because the buck would follow her and just as I predicted here he came. He was about 80 yards away when I whistled twice to no avail and then yelled “Hey” which did stop him...Eli got on him and fired and I knew by the deers reaction it would be a short track...we then went in and got dressed because both of us were in shorts and went and found his deer. This deer is huge bodied and very mature!

Nice, congratulations fellas, you guys won't be going hungry.

So what did the police officer radar say.

G
Thank you George. Speaking of eating I think I am going to cook some chili today. It feels like a chili kind of day...wet and cool...

Radar said I was slow...95 mph still smoking the tires while passing him...on flat ground with traction that little 8:1 engine does 116 in that distance but I have a new bullet I am building that should run 140 to the 1/8th with traction...
