2020 Live from the Stand

I’ve had a number of good sits. There are 5 using our place I’ll fling an arrow at if the conditions are right. I’ve seen 3 of the 5 in range (<50yds) but conditions weren’t right. With 5 weeks of bow season left, I’m not in a hurry. Here are pics of those I’ve had in range:

I've only done it a few times and it's the coolest thing whether it's a big buck or small one. I've never shot one I've rattled in either.

I’ve rattled in and arrowed a few axis deer. That’s about as fun as it gets!

I recently listened to the "rattling" study conducted by one of the biologist on the MSU Deer University podcast. Pretty amazing listen. I just don't have the confidence to do it during prime time. Always feel like I'm gonna blow every deer out of the area. Pretty cool you successfully rattled one in. Makes me want to give it a try again.
Rattling is my favorite way to hunt! Takes a big gulp to make as much noise as possible at prime time. But if ratio is tight and age structure has a good population of mature bucks nothing is more exciting. Give me a chilly day mid October before peak breeding kicks in, a steady breeze and preferably a high overcast and its game on. I'll rattle for 15 20 mins then move a few hundred yards and do it again. Over the years I have picked optimum spots over the farm to rattle. I want about 40-50 yards visibility in from of me and an opening or feature where deer cant get behind me. When its on and working dynamite!!!
The old wives tale that mature bucks only come in down wind, or take a long time to sneak in is just that...an old wives tale. They are just as apt to boil in like Mike Tyson.. or sneak in slowly. But usually if one is going to come they do it fairly quickly. And they come from wherever they are. Indeed they may work around to downwind but if set up is correct you'll see them first. Also they may hang around for a while attracting other bucks. Watch them close and they will tell you when another buck is coming.

I was pretty aggressive. I knew there was a buck in the area because I saw him at first light (6:45 AM) for a second. I rattled at 7:15 and a different buck came in from behind me. He walked straight in looking for the fight. He eased off after a minute in the same direction as the first buck.
I grunted and rattled (very aggressively) again at 7:45 and the second buck came in at full charge. He was dead downwind and didn’t care one bit. He ran around looking for the fight again and left with a confused look on his face.
Neighbor to East was mowing his woods openings with his riding mower “Clang, clang” (all near my East fence) and neighbors to my west must have gotten some poorly running ATV’s they are tearing around on and I live to the south so nothing for it than to go deep north...it’s hot and breezy and there is a small waterhole and the clover plot I can’t get to die out in front of me...oaks just south of me. Hope a good one wants a drink and a bite of sweet clover on the way to some acorns...

Add a decoy to that and you’re REALLY talking!! There isn’t anything in the woods much more exciting than watching a fired up buck stalk a decoy.
Sounds like the ATV is almost completely dead now...small victories...Neighbor to East was mowing his woods openings with his riding mower “Clang, clang” (all near my East fence) and neighbors to my west must have gotten some poorly running ATV’s they are tearing around on and I live to the south so nothing for it than to go deep north...it’s hot and breezy and there is a small waterhole and the clover plot I can’t get to die out in front of me...oaks just south of me. I believe someone is hunting just the other side of my NE corner...deer have blown 3 different times over there in the past hour.
And again somehow I placed myself in the exact spot where the deer wanted to be at exactly dark...not 5 minutes till dark...actual dark!

Filled my PA tag tonight. This guy was on my shooter list because his age and 250 lb. weight way out classed his 21" antlers.

Great shot placement on a brute! Congrats MM! I'm headed out to the farm this afternoon to chase em until Sunday. Wish I could post "Live" but no cell service when I'm sitting in the stand. AT&T coverage at the farm sucks. Son has Verizon and has coverage all over the farm. I have it only at the cabin which is on the highest point of the property with very occasional service from stand but not enough to generally push updates through.

We had exactly similar cell coverage at the cabin, I switched to Verizon to get coverage. 5 phones on plan, over several years time I switched all of them.
