access Trail Size

Curious how big you all make your access trails along your property line? I have an excavator on the property putting in our camp road but I feel that would be too big.

We make trails for the biggest piece of equipment we are going to use. If it’s an atv/utv and attached equipment, then that is the width. If it’s a 30-100ho tractor, then we make it wide enough for the tractor and what ever is on the 3 point or tow bar, Pickup truck and trailer, etc.

Also account for regrowth. My trails are lined with tag alder, and tag alder likes to grow about 12' per year and then lean into the opening and lay down. I have blasted my trails open twice in the last four years to beat back that growth so they don't need to cleaned up each year to keep scratchers off faces and fenders.

I think it's going to depend on how you plan to use them..... If your going to use them to access your plots and the like.....then you may want a wider trail to be able to get tractors, pick-ups and the like thru. If your only planning on using them for hunting access or property monitoring only.....then you may only need something to handle an ATV/UTV or even smaller.

If you do NOT have a fence along the property line I will tell you that the more defined trail you make....the more you are inviting trespassers.

I made all mine 40’ wide. After several years they are now effectively 30’ wide. It’s either that or be prepared for lots of limb trimming. I’ll add that log trucks had to access mine, thus the wide trails.

Ok, you get the official award for the nicest access trails. I was going to say make them wide. But 40 feet! That's almost as wide as the original Pennsylvania turnpike.
