Our Pets protection

We just got a new puppy 3 weeks ago and I have to say she has brought a new light to our family. Our last dog died too soon and it was caused by issues surrounding Lyme disease. The thread about our habitat work clothes got me thinking about protecting our new puppy. Pulled a tick Sunday. Too many products on the market to say whats the best, worst , or question it all around. We go with the collar. (I don't want to debate all of the products none are 100%) But had to wait for her to get to 10 weeks. With all of the Permethrin talk on the other thread got me thinking about treating a bandana, vest, or something to put on her while she is out in the woods? Any thoughts on that?? I read that sawyers actually sprays right on your dog (I am not doing that) . I would like to know if any of you have, do, or heard of anyone that protects there dog with Permethrin.

Thanks

My girlfriend is a Vet and Highly suggest the Seresto collars. Just make sure you buy them from the Vet office vs online. The cost is the same but there are a lot of fakes out there. They lose a LOT of animals to flea and tick infestation.
You can also take Permethrin, spray it on a cloth and rub the dog down with it ..fur, not skin. I'm not sure at what age they recommend doing this though. I'd check with your Vet. They see more of this than you might imagine.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Counterfeit collars!!!!!!! Are you kidding me. Jeff, thanks for the heads up. Guessing I am not the only one that will be surprised by this .

My wife is a Veterinarian and she does NOT recommend the Seresto collars because she sees way too many clients trying them with poor results. She recommends a an oral flea and tick preventative like Nexgard.

FWIW she has 75% of the dogs and cats that get tested are positive for Lyme. Moral of the story is to get your animals the Lyme vaccine as soon as you can. You shouldn't rely on the preventatives as they just don't work that well.

Well Strutt now you should be thoroughly confused and back where you started from. Maybe it would be best to consult with your Vet and see what they recommend.

I am a veterinarian. I would use Bravecto, NexGard, Simparica, or Credellio . There is no reason to use a topical preventative in this day and age when there are so many good oral options.

I run beagles, I use simparica for the simple fact once it’s in them, it’s in them.

Collars lose potency from rain and water. And topical could be washed off or rubbed off before it becomes effective.

Thanks for the suggestions and the puppy is on an oral dose right now, but with the finding of a tick on Sunday questions if that even works????? I am not slamming anyone but some vets are just as debatable as all of these products. I have had some bad vets over the years and just wanted my money, didn't care about the dog, we thought we had a good one with the last dog and towards the end it was to string us along and pumped a lot of money into a terrible out come. When we first met him, he was very good with the two previous but over time he got "too busy" and went from 30 min visits to 5 min and growing from a 1 room clinic to 8. We have found a new vet that we hope has our puppies best interest in mind. Like I said I am not in the debate game, more interested in the Permethrin route. We are going to get her vaccinated ASAP but trying to keep the ticks off of her to start with!!!!

The oral stuff doesn’t actually kill the ticks until they bite. And from my understanding the tick has to be attached to its host for over 24 hours to transfer Lyme disease.

I too believe the 24 hours it true. The tick I pulled was very much alive, attached and feeding. Not quite sure how long after the bite the tick dies?????

I believe Simprica is 16 hours. I’ve found many dead dried up ticks on my dogs when brushing them.

Permethrin is extremely toxic to cats, so if you have a pet cat (and you like it) do not spray it permethrin anywhere around it. If you spray it on a dog, keep the cat separated from it for at least 3 days.
