Farm and Ranch life

Great video, as usual. Do you have any issues with trees being browsed down? What percentage of trees normally do you expect to survive?
I'm not concerned about the trees being browsed down because the scale is too large. Good question on survival though and I don't know. My forester kinda froze up when I stuck the camera in his face cause I wanted him to give a lot more detail on tree planting.

Do you keep the bees for honey, pollination, or both?

I've wanted a hive since I was a kid. Not interested in collecting honey but..... I'm fascinated with bee behavior and I've read they can help ag production significantly.

Also, do you have heirs who are interested in deer? Oaks can be a long term payout.

I have the bees for both honey and pollinators....and because I like them and want them all over the farm. I eat some honey from the farm almost every day and I haven't had any real allergy issues in years. Maybe anecdotal but I'm one of the very few in this area that have no sinus problems.

Unfortunately none of my children have any interest in the farm, deer, or habitat mgt. None of them even live in the state. No clue what will happen to farm after me but that doesn't stop me from doing what I think is best for the property. regarding trees I consider the chinese [ oops ] answer to the question of the best time to plant a tree: Thirty years ago. Second best time to plant a tree : Today.

One of my favorites. Although incorrectly attributed to China, I also always like the “Chinese curse”.....
“May you live in interesting times”. These most certainly are interesting times. Think everyone could go for some more normalcy right now.

That’s a beautiful stand of crimson clover Rusty. I have about an acre of open area between my yard and the highway and this fall I’m gonna try some T&M with Crimson and MRC together. I think if I burn the competition down, seed it heavily, and fertilize, then mow it tight that I should get a stand.

That should work assuming rain. Crimson is a very vigorous reseeding annual and when managed right can last for years. The MRC should work also but I generally replant it every year as it doesn't reseed much for me.

Also late winter early spring crimson can be the go to forage out there with solid grazing pressure .

The highway R. O. W. is already pretty full of it in front of my house, and it gets better every year. I never mow it until it goes to seed, keep the behia grass killed out, and it has flourished over the past couple years. It’s slowly creeping to my side of the fence, but at my age, I can’t wait that long. :)

Evidently I’ve spread it to my pond dam with the shredder as I’ve got a pretty good stand on about a third of it too. I just think it’s attractive and will look much better in front of the house than bermuda grass and weeds. o_O

Short video of the best buck from last yr. Not proud of video quality but he's very uncooperative. Nonetheless I was bored with sequestering

Knowing he's around would certainly make each hunt exciting! I find it VERY interesting that antler traits jump around from year to year. I'm seeing it on my place and it's neat. I have one buck who's hung around several years that has inside kickers. Sometimes it's two kicks, sometimes it's one, sometimes long, sometimes short... never the same.

beautiful, do you ever clip your crimson when it starts to set seed to try to get it to last a little longer. I clipped some of mine this past weekend just to test it out.
I don't clip mine but I have heard that works. I use my crimson fields for double cropping so I want them to seed early so I can replant.

What's going on in your food plots now? You getting ready to roll the cool season and plant the warm season?

All the clover plots look incredible. We have had really good growing conditions for clover and deer are grazing heavily.

Seed shows up this week. Will start planting process next week intending to roll a field plant, then move to next field. I'm hoping there is enough thatch to avoid the need to spray. Will be a field by field decision. Will video the process. Love this time of year.

Ordered 5 tons of protein to be available first of May when I refill feeders. Consumption is low now with green up but that will change shortly.

Putting out 15 bags of minerals today. This is the same material as trophy rock from same quarry at a fraction of the price. Does it help? I don't know but it is inexpensive and easy.

I use that same stuff in the 44lb block. They carry them at Fleet Farm last I looked.

How long will that 5 tons of protein last for you? Like you they protein consumption for me has slowed way down but will pick back up as the summer heat moves in and there is not as much fresh new browse. I have been getting a ton a month but that will change here shortly I am guessing. Hopefully summer plots will help a lot this year as I did not plant them last year.
