195 Acres Southern OK

How big of a wood chipper would I need to shred the cedars into mulch. I thought about creating a big mulch pile near my camp to spread around camp to keep things from being muddy. I didn’t think one from the rental place would be near big enough. I figured it would have to be a truck like the tree services use.

You need stone (gravel) for what you are describing...if you use mulch you are going to track it everywhere. On muddy new construction gravel all your access areas and if you don’t want anything to grow anywhere else then use that cedar mulch. At our place we used gravel on our driving areas and luckily didn’t have too much mud because we are in flint country. When it dried up some I had topsoil trucked in and then sod placed...made a really nice yard!
I found out the hard way to also not using screenings as a walk surface as we had some left over from our shop build and I bladed it around the shop...we tracked it in and out of the shop every time we walked out there until I covered it all with gravel...

Spreading straw is a good way to keep mud down while allowing grass to grow.

Went out today to figure out where to start with some tree clearing. I have a lot of work ahead, but I’ve got plenty of time.

I’m going to enlist the help of a forestry mulcher with some of the very thick areas and hack and squirt on some other areas that aren’t quite as thick. I really need to get some browse growing.

For my plot areas, I have a few spots similar to this one.

They use to be planted, but I know it’s been at least a year. I think I will spray after things green up and drill a summer cover crop blend if possible.

I have some other areas that I’d like to do the same, but they haven’t been planted before

The areas that haven’t been planted are pretty thick with grass. What would be recommended for these?
Shred, spray then drill?

You have a notill drill? I like the shred, spray and drill, but the shred might not be needed if you kill the fescue and are able to cut through it with your drill. Sometimes dead grass is easier to cut through if left unshredded than shredded because the stems are all oriented in one direction. Is the ground more uneven where it hasn't been planted before? Uneven ground is the one enemy of notill, there's really no good recourse except to do tillage to level things up. How's your soil look on the new fields?

I have someone who will help me that has a no till. I’m not sure about the soil yet, will be doing this will test the next trip out.

I had thought about broadcasting, but I thought I’d no till if I had the option

With a notill drill that dead grass is your best friend, it will keep the soil moisture high, keep the weeds down, and turn into "clover feeding" carbon as it rots.

Well my drill connection fell through. He ended up selling it last month. I’ll be back to broadcasting.
I was working on clearing another spot this weekend for a smaller plot.
Had to get a trail there first

I cleared a little with my swisher mower after getting there. I plan on opening it up some more.

I’ll give the throw and mow a try in this spot. Going to try some mix with buckwheat before planting this fall. I’ll probably need to get it sprayed pretty soon

You mowed before you throwed? Too bad about the drill. What you could do that works well with a plot that looks like that, is spray with gly, then scatter your seed and drag a tooth harrow type implement behind the Polaris to shake your seed down to soil.

It was pretty thick. I wasn’t sure about any initial mowing. I do have a harrow and cultipacker that I can use. You’d still recommend skipping an initial mowing in areas with thick grasses?

This stuff is at least 8-10” thick

That's a good picture. And that looks like a perfect condition for throw and mow, I wouldn't mow until after seeding, because you want the seeds to shake down to dirt, and then the thatch on top. I'd spray glyphosate first, wait at least several days, then seed, then mow. Mowing twice if necessary after seeding to get things chopped up is ok.
This picture is not going to be a condition where you would harrow after seeding with the throw and mow method because harrowing would only bunch up all that loose thatch and that's not what you want. Your picture before this one is a condition where a harrow would possibly work without bunching to get the seeds down to dirt.

Thank you for your feedback. I can’t wait to get started

I’ve been clearing quite a few greenbrier patches over the last 2 weeks. It’s amazing how choked up my property is with briars in certain areas. I borrowed a buddy’s small tractor that has a 4ft shredder and it has worked well for baking into tight areas. Getting these areas cleared will give me some room to get in there to do some TSI over the next few months. I’ll get some picks up soon.

I also have a crew that is starting Monday on clearing cedars. I am very excited to get that project started

Deer feed on greenbriar, so while it may be a pain in our butts, it’s not necessarily to them. You have a nice looking place there, I’m looking forward to your future progress.

My opinion, you are a man in need of a utility tractor, a disc, a shredder, a cyclone type seeder/spreader, and possibly one or two more implements.

You are correct on my needs! Like everyone else, the COViD put a kink in my expenditures. I’ve had a lot of free time out there lately. I’ve have logged a lot of time on the chain saw.
My greenbriers were very mature, woody and choking out many trees. I figured I could free up some trees and trails and generate some new growth from the stems at the same time.

Yeah, they’re pretty tough so I imagine they’ll put on new growth and be that much more attractive. Taking the cedars out and getting some sunshine in those places is gonna work in your behalf too. Sounds like you’re headed in the right direction !

Here is some footage from the end of our burn on my place from this week. One of my buddies was able to get his drone in the air as we were wrapping up. It is my guess that this is the first time this place has been had prescribed fire in a long time. We are going to burn the rest of the area in June/July.

The cedar removal project is going great as well. I forgot to get pics this week while I while out there.
I have some Chickasaw plum trees that have shipped that I'll plant and cage next weekend as well.
Also got our septic in this past week which was a game changer for the family.

Would it be too early to start prepping for my cover crop summer plots? I was thinking about spraying this weekend and coming back in 2 weeks and planting a mix of buckwheat, sorghum, millet, cowpeas and sunflowers. I’ve seen various dates and was just curious.

I hope not, because I’ve already limed and disced a couple plots and disced the WW under in three more. I’m gonna plant in a week or two when I get the right night time temps and a weather window. You’re a little farther north than me, but no telling what the temps are gonna do. Cold fronts are getting weaker so it’s time to get it going !
