    Extra chestnut?

I have about 50 American Hybrid nuts from a tree I purchased from Oikos Tree crops when they were in business. I would be willing to part with a small portion if you are interested. Stratified in peat. Small, sweet nuts.

    Chestnut Production?

You fellas down south are blessed with your long growing seasons. Up in northern Michigan the catkins are still green. My 25 to 30 year old chestnut has been producing nuts for 3 or 4 years and is about half the size of your 9 year old tree.

    Chestnut Production?

Dunstans in my backyard in rootmakers for 5 years are 7 to 8 feet tall and bearing chestnuts. Meanwhile dunstans the same age out in the field are 3 feet tall and spindly.. They seem to have some die off every year.. I am going to have to clear the grass away and see what happens... location -...

Smartphone Electronic Compass Accuracy - Is it important?

My phone compass saved me from a panic lost in the woods situation at night and I use it to determine the exact southern exposure for tree planting.. High importance in that regard..

    Red osier dogwood cuttings

Mine grows native and is prominent on 8 acres of bottom land that is poor quality, hard, wet clay soil. It was 5 degrees there yesterday morning.

Forages With the Most Root Mass

Mangels were planted in garden rows, around June 1 about 1/4 inch deep and very close to one another, then thinned for better growth and used as bait after maturity. Never tried random field plantings.

Forages With the Most Root Mass

I have grown Mangels near Alpena, in bottom land, clay soil. Being a brassica type plant, they respond well to added fertilizer and result in very large, (a foot long and 6 inches in diameter), 5 pound tubers that deer love. They require some care to get started, then it's off to the races. With...

    Oak storage/stratification questions

Green is OK. I have picked mine from the tree and I am familiar with the drop time. The nuts would never hit the ground anyway as the supply is limited and squirrels would eat them before they hit the ground. If the squirrels are eating them, then they are good to go. Leave them on a shelf for a...

    Chimney Tales and Nightmares

Thanks for your input. I only used the monkey wrench to see if it is clogged and to clear debris at 2 in the morning.. ;-) The chimney has an 8 inch flue and is about 20 foot tall. Here is the brush I used to sweep the chimney. It is attached to a wire cable used to pull it through. The brush is...

    Chimney Tales and Nightmares

Went to visit my cabin in northern Michigan last weekend, for a "wellness check". First visit since last November. The last time I was there, I was awakened by the cold at 2 in the morning. This was the last day I was to stay there before going home. The chimney for the wood burning furnace had...

    Whitetail institute

I used their 30-06 minerals in early spring and summer. Deer loved it and after 3 years, bigger bucks appeared!

    Tree ID tags

I use the plastic tags, but, I gave up writing on them. I use a hole punch or drill to drill holes and then use a key for the number of holes - IE .. one hole - red oak / 2 holes - white oak...etc...

Rabbits etc. girdling trees w/ latex paint

Hot Pepper - I have used hot pepper in various ways. For tree trunk protection, i simmered vegetable oil with hot peppers - this would be similar to the red flakes used for pizza.. then "painted" it on tree wrap and let it "dry" before wrapping the tree. Worked well. Protecting against...

Dilema - Too many potted hybrid oaks going into WI Winter

I dig a trench - row - furrow - about 8 inches deep, put the pots in it and fill gaps with dirt. Pots are at least half way buried. For areas subject to animal damage, I put up posts and run some chicken wire around them. Pretty easy and I rarely loose any, especially oaks. I have also left them...
