    Elevated box stands

Spent two and a half days in the new hut last week and completely see what all the fuss is about with shooting blinds! Monday was a very cold windy hard rain switching to snow, Tuesday was hard north wind with snow...I sat comfy as a bug in rug even switched the heater on a couple times. Did...

    Elevated box stands

Interesting thread. This is the first year I've had one, havent hunted out of it yet but it is there for the crazy cold or spitting rain days and will keep me hunting longer. Mine was pre made cost me $1050 insulated, I put it on an 8' platform with skids on a logging trail in our woods. Was...

One Thousand Chestnut Trees - a Whitetail Deer Project

AWESOME project Wayne! I've got a dozen of your trees caged and at least that many more living free range along the woods from the batch I got from you two years ago. Most are around 4'-5' tall now and looking good. Last fall I was able to collect and stratify some of the nuts from my own...

One Thousand Chestnut Trees - a Whitetail Deer Project

Wayne, Found another one of your little ones today, it was direct seeded last spring after stratifying. Around 18" tall, I cleared out some of the competition around it and screened and caged. It is growing in a good spot about thirty five feet from a row of 3'-4' others I started from nuts I...

    CHESTNUT

I do the aluminum screen cage and I use mulch for the first two summers. I don't have much of a mice/vole problem and think mulch helps hold moisture better, just my preference. I'm not a fan of tubes at all.

window screen vs. hardware cloth vs. ?

All I use is aluminum window screen, mice/voles/bunnies can't chew through it and it last a long time and protects the trunk of a caged tree perfectly.

    CHESTNUT

Another vote for Chinese, they grow the best for me too and seem to be the most DR variety out there.

What can you tell me about caging trees?

You will like the cages. You should still screen the bottom first couple feet of those trees to keep mice/voles and bunnies from eating bark and girdling them, especially during winter. I've had rabbits in my back yard barely slow down going through that 2"X4" welded wire.
