    Walmart Dunstan Trees - Expectations

I have planted about 25 Chestnut Hill trees that consisted of 3 and 7 gallon chestnuts, Dr Deer and Thanksgiving pears, mulberries, crabapples, and persimmons. They have done okay, but I have lost a few. The first chestnuts were planted in 2017. Three of the four survived, but only one has...

    Walmart Dunstan Trees - Expectations

They jacked the prices up another $5 for each size tree since last year. Back in my day, I remember when you could buy a 3-gallon chestnut for $29 and a 7-gallon for $35. You could then get them for $4.50 on clearance. Those were the good old days.

    Callery Pear Grafting

Try both. You really don't have anything to lose. Graft two moon glow scions and one Kieffer. Note where you graft them and see which one or ones take. You can always prune back later. If none of them take, you can prepare earlier and try again next year or just go ahead and kill the callery...

    Walmart Dunstan Trees - Expectations

You can go to their web site and type in your zip code and find out if Walmarts near you will be receiving a shipment. If you scroll a little further down, you can click on the Walmart Spring 2024 Location link and it will pull up what stock the stores near you will receive. They also ship to...

    2023-24 Trapping

Is the otter population that high or do they just really like your place?

    2023-24 Trapping

How are you setting up the traps for the otter? Are you setting them where they routinely enter the pond? We have two ponds. The neighbor to the north has a pond. The neighbor to the south has two ponds also. I have seen otter in both my ponds, but never on a consistent (thank goodness) basis...

    Recommended deer skinner

I am kind of impressed that he was able to break a Vanguard although the last half inch of the Vanguard does narrow at the tip. I imagine he didn't break much off the end. If the knife has sentimental value to him, he can reprofile the blade on a coarse sharpening stone. He can also send it back...

    Recommended deer skinner

I would recommend a Buck 192, 692, or 113 for skinning and a Buck 105 for quartering and deboning. All of these are 420HC steel that will keep an edge for a long time and are fairly easy to sharpen.

    Young Fawn in December

My property is over in south Louisiana. The rut is mid-January. This was from November 4 when I was out bush hogging. I took a break and saw mom and baby run up from where I had been mowing 30 minutes earlier. They circled around in front of me and stopped 10 yards in front of the tractor. Mom...

    Drone Recovery Service

How hard would it be to get a permit from TPWD? It would be a nice service to have available if I ever needed it. https://tpwd.texas.gov/warden/law-enforcement-faq/drones-uavs

Looking for Dunstan Chestnut with specific characteristic

If I remember correctly, I believe you have some Dunstans in your yard. Do the burs from these trees open allowing the nuts to fall free? I agree with everything said so far. I wonder if lack of moisture plays a role in the bur fully opening though. From what I have read, chestnuts take up a lot...

    Nebraska NUTS

I don't know where you can get any for sale, but if you are looking to pick up some yourself, go to https://www.inaturalist.org/ and type in the species you are looking for and see if there are any trees located along your route. I use it all the time when travelling to locate potentially...

    Concorida Oak Growth Rate

I took a photo of my only Concordia oak this past weekend. Its growth rate has been underwhelming. I planted it in a raised bed as an acorn in fall 2018. I transplanted it to a pot in 2019 to grow another year before planting in its current location in early 2021. The three Dwarf Chinkapin Oaks...

    Concorida Oak Growth Rate

I was just at my property earlier this week. I could have taken a photo of my only Concordia that is left if I would have known this thread was going to be bumped to the top. The Concordia is about 7' tall. For a 4-year-old tree on my property, that is severely underperforming since most other...

    Sawtooth Oaks

I greatly respect your opinion on many things tree related, but the link you provided has several factual errors in it. The authors of the article were lazy and the authors they cite for the analysis did not know what they were doing when they compared the acorn nutritional content of different...
