Question for Baker (or others that observe giant deer often).

Doubtful in a free ranging herd....period. In my experience it usually takes a 3 year old to break the 170" mark

    Can't beat corn.

I personally will take standing beans over corn. If looking for a late season food source in my area the deer prefer beans to corn. If looking for a mid-season / rut food source the corn is better in my area. For an all year food source soybeans have been great for me. For sheer number of...

Hate the cams I own. Looking to buy a few new ones

Exodus is what I use. I have 35 of their 1st series. I have not tried out the new higher end one or the new economy camera. I know the owners well and just from what I know about them they are quality.

Aging deer by Forensic Cementum Annuli

I had my 174" buck I killed last year sent off and aged and it broke my heart. What I thought was an older deer was only 4.5 yr old. I had him guessed at 5.5+. After studying the other big old buck I let walk several times last year I now believe him to be 6.5+ and should have used my tag on...

    Brassicas into beans

You are fine on your timing to get brassicas, turnips and radishes out. I usually wait for the canopy to start to drop off some but if they were late beans if you can get seed to soil they will grow. I would go out just before or during a rain shower and sad to say but the best way to get the...

    Trespass prosecution

The laws on this issue are just crazy. I would think you could just file criminal trespass charges

    Trespass prosecution

Do game wardens or sheriff's department take care of these matters in your area? In my area it is just a matter of filing charges and they can go to court to prove they are innocent. The game warden takes care of these charges in Illinois. I would say if the justice system isn't going to work...

Age help, shooter or let him grow?

His body says 4.5 and face says 3.5. I think it is really impossible to tell the age of deer after age 3. The only way to know for sure is if you have history with the individual deer. Anyone that says they know the age of the deer 100% accurate without history is full of well you know. I...

    Hello Deer! Are you home?

Believe me if I was a crying man I would have cried. The bow encounters didn't discourage me much. I had shot opportunities but I didn't like them and let him walk. He was always quartered too strong for my liking. I wanted that perfect broadside shot so I knew I wouldn't blow the shot...

    Hello Deer! Are you home?

Native - that is exactly what I am finding too. Deer do some crazy things. I am guessing you are correct and that deer did his same thing every year on your farm. Back in 2009 I was hunting a buck that I thought would go in the mid 180's, in 2010 I got on this deer. I had multiple...

Who introduced you to the outdoors?

My father doesn't hunt but I fished with both my grandad's on a regular basis. I moved up to rabbit and squirrel hunting with them when I was about 10. They were both gun hunter's but back in those days gun season was crazy with hundreds of guys together doing drives, killing their doe or...

    Hello Deer! Are you home?

Like Don Higgins or not he has wrote about this a few times and talked about it in his seminars. He has come up with the theory that a buck will do the exact same thing every year on or close to the exact same day. Which I believe is where we see these deer that we believe disappear then...

Muddy Sky Box vs Millennium L110

Not a comparison in my opinion. Millennium by far superior. I have both up the Muddy's are great stands as well but as far as comfort and ease of installation the Millennium's are the best.

    Something to think about

I walk through my sanctuaries at least once a year in the early spring to pick up sheds. I also hinge cut them to turn them into the tangled mess I want them to be. I am guessing probably hinge cut around every 3 years.
