Poachers...

They do catch these cheaters sometimes. This one was poached night before rifle down the road from me. Another guy this year was fined hefty w new law of leaving carcass unused in addition to his poaching. But I doubt any arrests make a dent in what’s really taken.

I just received my first supressor after a 12 month wait from the ATF. 99% of these guys couldn't afford one at 1K+ each. Yeah they can DIY oil can but that's a 20 year federal vacation and they know it.

It's great for my ears also. I don't shoot deer anymore but I pity the racoon that walks across my path! And no they aren't silent you just cant tell where the shot came from.

We have more trouble with the entitled group of young college age kids than the working class redneck. They've never had to work for anything so the don't have a problem taking what isn't theirs. These kids have endless resources, big egos and little brains. The weapons they use are more than likely their dad's but it happens more than I'd like

I understand. I'm more worried about getting shot by a hillbilly methhead hybrid. Not much money in rural oklahoma.

Along the lines of crazy hunters, just saw that 2 guys were cited this past hunting season for flying drone in state forest, looking for deer. Had 2 loaded guns in bed of truck. WV outlawed drones for deer scouting during hunting season several years ago. The guy admitted what they were doing.

Attention, recognition and that moment in the spotlight......that is what they seek....without ANY of the work to get there. All of the times I have seen or heard about poaching it boils down to simply being lazy. Too lazy to do the work to reach that recognition they so desire any other way....all for some antlers in most cases.

These late-season “doe only” hunts take out a lot of run-down, shed-antlered bucks LEGALLY.

That just sounds crazy to me. Our bucks hold onto their antlers tight until late April even into May. One of the reasons why I had to snake train my shed dogs

I know a local processor. He's told me that a lot of bucks get taken during the January antlerless season.

Not in Kansas, Nebraska, and other midwestern states where they hold these stupid things. Heck, I’ve seen the shot like that in Georgia after Christmas.

We have a lot of bucks using our place...I think right now there are 18 bucks using our 90 and it was roughly the same last winter. I have a theory...if we have a good acorn year the bucks hold antlers longer...poor to no acorn crop they drop sooner. We bought our place in 2014 and had good acorn crops every year except 2018. Last winter bucks started shedding before Christmas and all of them were done by February 1st last year. We had a great acorn crop and I have pictures of only 1 shed buck so far and that buck has a hurt foot.

Supposedly the shedding of antlers is due to the decrease in testosterone. I have also seen where a lack of nutrition late can lead to early shedding. My question to you Okie. Do you believe with the good acorn crop you attract and hold more does thus making the bucks hold onto their antlers longer or is it the added nutrition the culprit, or option 3 with having a great food source thus attracting more bucks their testosterone levels remain higher for longer? Interested to see. I know with us it is our out of balanced deer herd no doubt

It may be because we have an almost 2-1 buck to doe ratio...I did see a large 11 point in our backyard running does last Thursday. We only have about 9 does using our place...

It really makes no sense to me, lots of variables. We had good acorn crop after a hard drought. So food, but not food at same time. I see each year some drop in Dec and some into March. Never has made much sense to me and these are regardless of food supply and deer density that I can tell.
The 8 I shot in ML season 3rd wk of Dec dropped both his antlers as he ran thru a creek thicket. Wierd to walk up to a suddenly hornless deer on the ground. :(
