Per trail cam it looks like I need to do something about raccoons!

Even the deer agree...

I set 3 dog proofs yesterday evening using mini marshmallows as bait. A raccoon got caught with his hand in the cookie jar...

Neighbor to the north got 11 in one night last weekend with a coondog. Said the dog had a hard time getting scent so the spotlighted the hackberry trees. This time of yr they will den in trees with a food supply and just never come down.

When we were kids we would do that with persimmon trees. I don’t have anymore like that and not a lot of hackberry. We are pretty much solid woods...not easy to shine coons in solid woods...

I am going to wait until next march. Get the coons before they have babies - and late enough that more of them dont move in before turkey nesting season.

Already caught 4 this year,2 in dog proofs and 2 in 220 boxes,Will set again soon and start trapping beaver, wish we had otter to trap but I have only ever seen 1 in Kansas.A local guy here has probably already caught 50 coyotes and over 100 coon and I bet around 10 cats

When I was a kid back in the 70’s raccoon were $30-$50...they were really hard to catch because they were a lot rarer. Opossum was $5- $7.50, bobcats ran up to $200, coyotes were same as coon, foxes were $80-$120... the good old days...

I trapped three months a year in the late 70's. I made more money trapping in three months than I made working regular jobs the rest of the year. Stayed in a tent. Set out Sunday Eve and Monday morn. Picked up Friday and came into town to sell on Saturday. Rested up Saturday night, and headed back out Sunday afternoon. Every town - even the small towns, had a resident fur buyer or someone who would travel through on Saturdays. If I could average a coon or two everyday - added to other furs I would catch - I was in high cotton - running three to four dozen traps. Now, I sometimes catch five coons in five dog proofs in one night.

I was in my teens and made all of my winter money trapping. I would catch about 1 coon a month because everyone was after them but I made bank on possums and skunks. I never caught a coyote and still haven’t but I never set a trap for them either...until today. I set 2 dirt hole sets using some deer meat scraps. We will see... I haven’t set any traps near that feeder with all the coons yet because my wife may bowhunting there over the Christmas holidays and I didn’t want to ruin it but once we get into January I am going to be setting some dog proofs there...

coons are super rare in our area. About 5-6 years ago some kind of disease hit them and you would find them dead everywhere. Since then they have been very scarce. I think I only caught 1 on camera in the last 2 years.

Our body count so far is 9 opossum, 3 coons, and 1 skunk. I thought it would be the other way around with opossum and coons.

if it was on dog proofs it could be mice, I like to use the coon grabbers in the bottom of my dog proofs or I put a big marshmallow at the bottom so they cant pick it clean. If I have a mouse problem I use the caps on my dog proofs. Coons pull them right off to get to the bait.
