2019 Live from the Stand

Love it when a plan comes together
Many times I have referenced that it was my son who got me into deer hunting. When he was about 10. But now he and family live in NC and can only come down for hunting about once a year. This year his oldest boys (9 and 11) were more excited about "seeing some deer" so they planned a Thanksgiving trip (which is just after season opens and better chance).
They came to the lake on Monday and we spent that afternoon and Tuesday morning with some target practice. I was so proud of my son in the way he systematically led the boys thru safety and bulls eye shooting (He is a much better shot than I am).
We splattered the target

The Tuesday afternoon hunt was exciting but no deer was taken. My oldest grandson had some young deer early but did not take a shot. They were small and this trip was more for his cousins.

When we got back to the truck we learned that everyone had some deer activity and "almost" a shot. My son's oldest had a doe in the crosshairs but something spooked her. It was enough to get everyone pumped.
But Tuesday night and early am Wednesday was not looking good. We had a monsoon show up and was threatening our wednesday morning hunt. I got a kick out of the interest all the boys showed in the weather. They watched intently as my son explained what was coming .

We decided we had to try it, and if we could just get to the stands it could rain all it wanted to. The weather map did show some clearing a little later. So we all got our choice of Coffee or Hot Chocolate and prepared for the hunt.

About 6:45 a shot rang from my 243 and we were excited. Soon my son texted Deer emoji, Doe, Skull. I was in a stand with two grandsons and Jack said he saw the deer go down. Sure enough Carter had his first deer with a perfect shot

On Thanksgiving Day we celebrated with family and enjoy some great good. Appetizers included some Summer Sausage from the deer Jack got on Nov 16. A great day and so much to be thankful for

Oh, and this one told me that she wants to go to one of those "play houses" but just with a camera and not a gun. I plan to make that happen!

That’s a great story and very well told. I bet those boys were excited! Good job to all involved and a Happy Thanksgiving!

Finally caught up with one of our bucks on the hit list. Youngest killed him this morning with a 200 yard heart shot. His best/oldest buck to date. He was pretty cool under pressure, maybe better then his old man.

NICE BUCK and incredible accuracy at 200yds! Lot of people don't realize how far a shot that is; especially us Southern hunters who are lucky to see 100yds due to the thick.

Kinda camakazi hunting for me this year. An hour here and there. Went yesterday evening hour befor dark stalking to back ridge. Three months since you know what. Quiet again and jst leaned against a tree overlooking big bowl. Gave the tall browe tine 8 a close look but finally let him pass. Still waiting for the 10 that still lives his 4th gun season. He’s prob safe as not sure I’m in a killing mood. Odd. Hope tapatalk doesn’t make this pic unreal huge again. Forgive if does.

I didn’t see squat last night. I was hoping the weather (rain and wind) that we got today was going to get the deer active but that didn’t happen. I was hoping to hunt a break in the rain this evening, but I got roped into putting up x-mas stuff...... not my idea.... maybe I will get a chance tomorrow

About 8 I saw a group of does - counted 4 for certain. 1/2 hour later I think part of that group came past the plot but didn’t stop. Wind is picking up the other the sun being higher as well. I need to see what condition the plot is in before I call it a morning....

beans rotate.jpg AAEB7EEB-F8F9-41A6-97B2-6D7A16831768.jpeg Plot looks rough. Beans are pretty much gone and the leaves of the turnips are as well. They are hitting the bulbs already.... which I think is because of the colder than normal temps we have had. The good news is that there is an ag field across the creek is in cover crop. That plot wasn’t that strong due to rain timing....

Those PA deer have come a loooong way MM ! (if that deer came from PA)

Those two bucks were the only ones I saw. Hung it up about 11:00, wind got up pretty good so I decided not to hunt this afternoon.

Emma rotate.jpg note rotate.jpg Last hunt of general firearms season here in IN..... and somebody decided they wanted to go with me. It’s raining here with a 15 mph wind so we are back in the battle wagon where she commemorated the first kill for this blind. Not sure if we will see any but last hunt.... gotta go.

I’m overlooking my rye, peas, radish plots again. Don’t think there are many peas left. Steady SW wind in my face with periodic gusts up to 15 mph. One month of the season left and lots of doe tags left to fill.
