How close are the trees planted to each other? That looks like a pollination issue to me...

You can see from these pictures the "edge feathering" and "old field" effects I have created over the past 17 years. From the stand picture looking at the south end of the plot you can see persimmon trees in the foreground. Along the edge of the plot, kinda in the middle of the picture, is a chinkapin oak I started from an acorn about 6 years ago, that now has acorns. In the picture of the north end, in the foreground, you can see the top of young sawtooths I started from acorns and a variety of oaks that I left out in the "old field". A buddy said I should cut them all down so I can see the whole plot. I've always figured it's best to have things more than 50% in the deer's favor if you want good deer hunting. 90% or more if you want good BUCK hunting.

Tommy...That deer is among the walking dead in this part of the country but just doesn't know it. 2.5 and 3.5 yr olds just don't have much of a chance in these parts.

Yep. With all the land that the pro baseball player, the insurance man, the lawyer, and the Governor have around me, you'd think we could grow some nice bucks. But, their "hunters" apparently hammer everything that starts to show some potential.
That said, if he comes by me, he's gonna get to be a star. I've killed only three bucks in the 17 years I've owned the place. About time for #4.

No wonder they die! That is open AND in daylight! The big boys here rarely even enter the open after dark...

Got to remember though, season isn't open yet (I don't allow stick slinging) AND these are my pets. LOL. Plus there's lots of good vittles right there. But, also, he's only a 3 1/2 year old, which to me, is the easiest buck on the planet to kill once the rut kicks in.

That's a really nice buck that so many people would be happy to have a chance to take. I used to fret about bucks making it or not making it through the year but I as I get older, I don't dwell on things I can't control. If I pass a decent buck, I do it knowing full well that I may never see him again. At the end of the day, you can't eat antlers! Enjoy the ride. Good luck this season!
