Suburb deer culling

Took a doe yesterday afternoon by my house. Im part of a nuisance deer removal program for my municipality. They supply the tags for free and we can kill bucks and does with a bow only but we cant keep the antlers. All the heads of all the deer must be turned in for CWD testing. Im picking up another tag this afternoon. 10 yard shot, 50 yard run. Woodsman broadhead.

This is not recreational bowhunting. This is suburban deer culling/nuisance removal. If you let bowhunters keep the antlers they will target suburban bucks when the goal is to remove does but removing both sexes is needed so killing bucks is allowed just to hit the goal numbers of deer killed.

This is a touchy subject with certain people so one has to tip toe to avoid attention and hassle from the deer lovers/anti hunters. Shots are during legal hunting hours but recovery/drag out is done after dark to lessen the impacts on those opposed to this culling.

I've done that before in Illinois but we had to kill 6 kill does before being permitted to kill a buck which makes sense if you want to reduce the population. It was at a State park and we had to be out by 10:30 am when it was then open to the public. It was not popular with some and there were Anti's on site each morning. One Anti went to the extent to buy a bow and get her permit (they limited the number each day) just to keep one of us from hunting. She strolled through the woods being as disruptive as possible. I was a young man new to the state and just looking for a place to hunt. It was my first experience with an Anti face to face. For me it was a real downer and pretty much sucked.

The ironic thing is, those anti-hunters are likely going to be the ones to save the whitetail in North America after the states and deer orgs team up to eliminate them with CWD culls.

lol. we are set to remove 25 this year. It wont make a dent and fawning will more than replace what we kill.

According to what my Brother has sent from Pennsylvania, they are about to do an eradication of deer there "due to CWD concerns".

There have been a minimal amount of deer found with it, my numbers could be off I posting from memory, but it was like 5 out of 5000 or so. They simply want to kill as many as they can just to do a study to see how many just might have it. Crazy really the way they are going about it.

The first wave was to hire Snipers to simply shoot the deer to deliver to the Pa Game Commission, but the Sportsmen went nuts and started a huge Push Back and it seemed to work. Now they are proposing a whole new way of hunting by adding Rifle into Archery Season and Early Muzzleloader. That's right guys using Rifles during the annual Archery Hunts and Muzzleloader. They are attempting to basically wipe out the deer herd, if what I have read is correct.

My Brother and Other Sportsmen in the State have Banded Together and formed a group to oppose what they are planning to do.

Now what you are doing is a whole different deal than what Pa is trying.

I know that in many Suburban Areas the Deer population has grown to a crazy amount of deer. People can not grown Flower or Vegetable Gardens, the deer wipe them out. I remember many years back in the Pittsburgh Area the deer population got way out of hand and guys started hunting with Bows there and were taking some huge Bucks.

Personally I like the "Earn a Buck" System where you have to take so many Does then you get a Buck Tag. If more areas did that it would make both the Hunters and the System happy.

One last Question: What happens to the Meat? You stated that they take the Head but do you get the meat or does it go to some good use?

Most places they talk out of one side of their mouth that it's going to food pantries to feed poor people. The other side of their mouth they're saying we're all going to get Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease from eating it.

Good luck man. It's worth fighting for. We tried for 5 years to get meaningful answers, accountability, and reform, and the system won. Nobody in a position to do anything had the time or expertise to wrangle our state agency. To make matters worse, 99% of hunters did not care, and the state already had state employees planted in every major deer organization to protect the idea that deer hunters wanted the herds wiped out too. It was something magnificent to see the corrupt web they wove in action.

To this day they are running wild and with a bigger checkbook to snuff out our herd statewide. Rumor has it our cull radius is going to be expanded to 50 miles from each positive. They're also prepping plans to control the herd without the aid of hunters.

I'd completely skip the democratic process and go straight to dismantling the average guy's confidence in the state and corrupted "deer advocacy" groups they have in their pocket.

I gift the meat as I have far too much wild game. Last year, the live weight of all the game I took with my bow was 4,430 pounds. This year Im already at 1,600 pounds so I gift, donate much meat as well as give it to family and friends. Wild game is all I eat but I can only eat so much.

Wow that is a LOT of Wildgame Meat.

How do you accumulate so much? As in do you hunt many species or mainly deer.

Im a traveling bowhunter. In the last 18 months Ive bowhunted WI, MI, IN, IA, FL, TX, Hawaii and have more hunts coming up in WI, IN, OH and TX. Here are some of the critters Ive taken with a bow in the last 18 months. It doesnt include all the deer.

FYI, that is NOT A COW. That is a Vancouver Bull I took at 9000 feet on the big island of Hawaii last Feb. These are wild/feral, free range scrub bulls roaming the mountain jungle.

That's a lot of killing. And some funds to get it all done.

More than I will ever do, but happy for you.

Another nuisance, antlerless suburban deer cull with my bow. Double lung pass through and 50 yard run. I used the same re-sharpened woodsman broadhead I used to take the last nuisance antlerless suburban deer cull. Ive re-sharpened it and will use it again. This is the 8th animal Ive taken with the woodsman heads (6 deer, a Russian boar and a bull elk) in the last 2 seasons. Im pleased with their performance and durability and how fast they bring down game.

You must be quite a shot if you get your arrow between the ribs each time. I always seem to hit a rib on one side or the other ;).
