Annual rye grass

Bhaia is the Natural Grass that grows the best here in Florida. You are correct that he Seed Heads will continue to Re-Seed itself constantly.

I went from St Augustine Grass, due to a 2nd Hard Frost killing it off, to doing a Seeding of Bahia on my yard. Over a period of several years along with an Bi-Annual Seeding my yard has become a thick full nice yard of grass.

Interestingly the State of Florida uses Bahia to Water Cannon seed the sides of the road after Road Work. At night you will see Deer along the sides of the roads eating it happily. Turkeys also are in it all the time during the day.

The Stuff grows everywhere and I'm starting to wonder if it has a sort of Bad Rap due to No One thinking it is a good seed to use for Deer. I am seriuosly thinking about putting some down on some of my areas to see if it helps where almost nothing wants to grow.

I have never seen deer eating it. Hogs root it up constantly and eat the roots (I guess), maybe they’re going for grubs. There’s no way I’d have it in my yard, after any moisture it grows those weed heads to a foot high in a few days. It dulls the hell out of mower blades too. Maybe we ain’t talking about the same grass. I kill it wherever i can on my place. Easy to kill with Cimarron, you just have to be diligent and persistent.

Yeah, I’ve never seen deer eat bahia. There’s no way I’d plant it in my yard, trying to get rid of a yard full of it now. Hate the stuff, it’s the reason I have to mow so often. Dang seeds are ridiculous...

MSM Turf is what you need for Bahia in your yard. It’s good stuff. In one season, I’ve pretty much eradicated it.

I like bahia in my camp yard. Easy to kill with glyphosate if it gets where I don't want it. Shade kills it too. Turkeys like it. Pretty good companion for white clover.

I’d say it probably is.

There are two strains. Argentine Bahia and Pensacola Bahia.

Argentine is for warmer climates while the Pensacola is for cooler climates.

Yes the seed head grow quickly but here in Florida the grasses are different than you would see in most states. As for cutting yes you need to keep your blades sharp.

Here the St Augustine Grass is very disease and bug issued. Also needs a ton of water.

Bahia browns some during winter but by May Jun in Central Florida the rains have come and its green and beautiful. Takes very little to keep a yard looking good.

Yep, except for the seed stalks, stays fairly low and sod-forming. Just mow regularly and you have a beautiful yard. Whether in central Florida or north Georgia.

I am not a fan of most introduced grasses...I dislike Fescue, Johnson, Sericia Lespediza, and only tolerate Bermuda to a point. I wish what was growing on the prairies of South Dakota was our grass. Never gets too tall even without grazing...buffalo grass perhaps. I know sericia lespediza was used for erosion control on old mining sites and areas the top soil was completely stripped but I wouldn’t wish that crap on anybody...

You are more tolerant than I am with bermuda

I hate all things bermuda........

I guess we’ll agree to disagree on bahia grass, if I let it go I’d have three acres to mow every week.
