Any of you guys ever use the INaturalist app? It’s pretty cool. The local college in my town just organized a bio blitz and used it to catalog everything which is prettty awesome. Might be able to leave Native alone for awhile.

I have played around with it some. It really depends on where you are at as far as how useful it can be in discovering new and interesting trees. Around my town, we have quite a few large parks and a wildlife refuge where there are tons of things that have been identified. Go 25 miles north of here into the country and the observations are few and far between. The positional accuracy or inaccuracy of a phone GPS can make it frustrating at times trying to find specific trees or plants.

Yeah, I was wondering how widely utilized it was. If not for the local school doing the bio blitz it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting for my area but with that done it’s pretty awesome.

Works ok, I also have:

PlantSnap, Leafsnap and VTree

All require a great photo and definitely work better on some plants than others.

You can go to their web site and just look at the maps and search for observations around your area or any area of interest. I find it much easier to navigate the web site on a computer screen than trying to view a map on my phone.

Just remember that anyone can input an observation and make an identification. Just because something has been identified doesn't mean that it has been identified correctly. The majority of the observations that I have looked at were correct, but there were quite a few that were not even close. This observation was made over a year ago and the tree is very clearly an overcup oak and not a bur oak.

Yeah, unless the ID is marked as research grade they can be suspect. But most seem on and the research grade ones seem to be always correct
