"Whitetail Hollow" - 90 Acres NE Oklahoma.

Thank you sir, I have been very fortunate in my hunting life and god placed my wife and I on a dream property that I had access to almost my entire life but never hunted until we purchased...looking forward to retirement here on “Whitetail Hollow”...

Yea I need to catch back up. I remember the beginning on the old forums. Keep up the good work!

The mass on the deer in your area is pretty amazing. What percentage do you attribute to food sources versus natural genetics? Did you see that kind of mass when you first started hunting the property, before there were food sources provided?

I believe the mass was here well before I was. First deer I took here had a lot of mass. I just think it’s the genetic trait of the herd...

Look who’s home!

Taxidermist asked me if I had hit the deer through the ear because it had a perfect .30 caliber hole through the ear...one of the spotlighters got close!

Love it. Interestingly, the big buck I killed in 2017 (which is still not back from the taxidermist...ugh) had a similar hole in the exact same spot. We figured it was either a bullet hole or from fighting.

Not only is the size of the bucks on your property amazing, I’m amazed by the amount of big ones you’ve got every year.
Why do you think that is? Seems like you’ve mentioned that you hear a lot of gunshots around you, even out of season.
Endless supply of acorns? Fertile soil? Importing from deer ranches? Share your secret!

I have spent a lot of time hunting in my life and it has always been the big woods. I grew up in an area where deer that showed themselves in the open in daylight died...year round...so I spent all my time in the woods. I learned terrain features that seem to concentrate deer movement such as saddles, ridgetop funnels, and fingers and when looking at a topo map of where to hunt I find myself drawn to these areas and have had a lot of success. I have killed every big deer I have ever taken in country like this. I can count on one hand how many deer I have taken in an open area, not because I didn’t see any but because I didn’t see a deer I considered worthy of harvest in those areas...an example is the bucks I call “Ten” and “Stickers” may need 2 years...

As for acorns...there were absolutely no acorns anywhere near our place this year. The plot and feeders have been drawing them in like crazy but the plot is for young deer and does and the feeder is usually only really good during the rut when the bucks follow the does near it.

Most of you would pass on our place if you were looking at it for deer hunting. All along our east side we have long 10 acre tracts that are only 330 feet wide at our fence so there are 8 of them that border us and they all seem to have hunters on them. We have a larger property to our north that has several guys hunting it. On the west we have 3 properties border us and all of them hunt. Directly south we have somewhat of a buffer but the property past the 40 acres there has the biggest bunch of poachers you ever saw. The shooting over there is horrible throughout the season day and night. To top it all off we have a county road running through our place splitting around 20 acres off from the other 70. Nothing jumps out at you from that road if you were looking for a place to deer hunt...

As far as why I can kill and keep big deer around here is I watch the wind like a hawk and only try to hunt it with a perfect wind. I stay mainly to my trail system to keep the ground scent at a minimum and I spend a great deal of time in a tree...

It pays off...

Those are good points. Not sure if this is what you were getting at, but what I got from that is that you offer a safe place within an area filled with high pressure hunters.
These older deer congregate on your property because it’s the only place around that seems safe to them. I’m sure they understand that your fence is where the safe area ends, too.
Good stuff

Yes, that and the fact that I haven’t taken all of the big deer here. I have gotten 3 on public land because I seeked out the features I was describing above...most guys seem to move toward the big fields and field edges and they kill deer...but they don’t kill the biggest deer. I move away from the fields more toward where I think they will travel to possibly get to the field well after dark and I use terrain to funnel them down to the narrowest point of movement.

I have also killed several good bucks mid-county and south-county. I hunt with a little bit older fellow on our lease and every time I bring in a deer from down there it is bigger than anything he has ever seen. We hunt the same property but I climb a big mountain well back up into the timber and he hunts the lower field edges and bottoms...

Terrain, timber, and time...

LMAO Okie. I thot I was the only one that piled antlers thruout the house. When I was selling, the realtor said I really should get rid of all those, but I said not going to happen. I am downsizing and have however disposed of many in the house and garage pile. Made a lot of dogs happy. I like how you hunt and always enjoy your updates. Congrats, hope the wife is doing well.

My last 2 months in CO I kept looking up only to find empty walls. I wouldn't be surprised if Okie could look at deer heads from the throne.

Not wanting any sympathy but many of you know about a little thing called the Government shutdown. I know most of you probably think federal employees are all a bunch of whiney Democrats who are just sitting home waiting on the Government to reopen to collect their back pay all the while bashing our president. In some areas and positions this may be true but not in mine or my wife’s position. We are federal employees and are considered “excepted” which means our jobs are jobs that cannot just stay home until this is over. We are required to report to work each and every normal work day and we are not allowed to take any leave but we get no pay until the government reopens. We drive just over 1 hour to work and to make it trickier we work different hours from one another so 2 cars @ 130 miles per day. We work in healthcare and our jobs and the jobs of our staff mean life and death for many...

Now having said this I am a strong supporter of strong borders and of our president. I in no way shape or form hope this border wall does not happen and I stand behind him 100%. I luckily have saved up for a rainy day but many have not and are struggling already with trying to make ends meet.

We are also in the middle of a refinance of our land with a different lender because the “balloon” is due Feb. 2nd and the original lender “no longer offers that product” that we purchased our property with... we owe very little in the scheme of what we have here but it is still more than I can come up with in 19 days. We will be fine as long as this shutdown last less than 6 months even having to pay closing cost again but past that would be horrendous for us.

I know many of you do not like the Government and I understand that but there are many just like you that work in the many fields that are just like the field you work in that are having it tough...just say a little prayer for our president in these trying times he is being persecuted in and a larger prayer that congress will start working for the people that elected them instead of the party line...

Thanks...

Okie, I want to say thanks for the work you and your wife do and the attitude/worh ethic you two have. I never felt government shutdowns should affect federal employees... just federal politicians. If you ever need help send me a PM. You guys are plenty close enough to drive down with a couple of coolers of frozen meat or whatever is needed.

Thanks catscratch...we have a freezer full of deer meat and my wife had stocked our cabinets well throughout the years so we should be fine. We started the KETO diet on the 2nd and if anything it is not cheap...still looking for KETO friendly ground deer recipes lol...
