Chinese Chestnuts at Home Depot

Was at Home Depot today and noticed they still had a bunch of Chinese Chestnuts in stock. Some of them looked pretty bad but there were a few that still looked decent. I got to talking to the nice lady at the register and when I asked if they were ever going to mark the trees down she told me they can’t because all the nursery stock is not actually owned by them. I kind of all ready knew that but then she asked me what I was interested in and I told her. She then offered to mark it 50% off. Not being one to pass up a deal I came home with this...

Okay so it’s not the best deal ever especially for a Chinese Chestnut but I’ve been wanting one to diversify my home orchard a little bit and this will do that nicely. It’ll also be close to the house so I’m going to go ahead and get it in the ground and water it as necessary. My hope is that it’ll at least bloom next year which will hopefully help some of the other trees set nuts.

Radar is a Mullen’s Feist. But I think the kids have spoiled him just a tad and maybe I have too. Lol

Here’s a pic of his Momma getting after them squirrels. She’s about 15’ up in a pecan tree. Climbed up and got down all on her own.

Radar huh ? Well, he's got the ears for it, and the build to chase. He ain't quite as fat as my squirrel chaser. :)

Your tree looks a little ragged now, but I bet a little TLC will straighten it up. Good luck with it. How soon do they bear nuts ?

We leave food out for him 24/7. I just always assumed he ran it off but may need to look into a different brand of food with higher fat content or something. I need to get out and work with him more than I do. We got him a a little over a year ago and my thoughts were at the time I'd get him hunting pretty good about the time my son (who's 5 yo right now) would be old enough to go squirrel hunting with me in a couple years.

Yeah, the tree looks a little rough right now due to all the neglect it received while setting at the Home Depot nursery the whole summer probably not being watered as often as it should. The pot it was in said it was five gallons but it looked awfully small to me. The trees are getting ready to drop their leaves here so hopefully I'll be able to keep it watered and the roots will get more established this winter in time for green up next spring.

A couple years ago I got a couple Dunstan trees from Wal-Mart that looked similar. Now a year or so later you can't even tell those trees were stressed to the point if near death..

Wanted to do an update. This tree has lingered and lingered and has finally decided to give up. I will be replacing it with something else this winter.
