It's the small things

This is a LONG way from Native Hunter's fruit bearing paradise but I was so glad to see this tree recently.
Way back in 2012 I grew sawtooth, persimmon and pear from seed. These trees are scattered all over my little property now. The success rate was pretty good. Couple years back the pear trees found a cooperative spring and put on some small pears. Still waiting for the sawtooth but trees have only been in the ground since January 2013. But now this Persimmon shows some fruit!!




I know it's a small thing but great to get results after picking the 'simmons, separating the seeds from the gunk, getting them to grow, babying them along, planting, and turning over to the Creator. Well, I guess it's a pretty BIG thing to watch that happen

Reminds me of the saying " you can count the seeds of an apple but you'll never count the apples from a seed".
You've started something that will have exponential benefits. Nice job!

Everything great has to start somewhere, and you are off to a fine start.

That persimmon looks awesome, and I can tell you from experience that it will only get better and better each year. My seedlings that just started bearing last year have doubled their crop this year.

That is so cool.

I didn't start my fruit trees from seed, but it's satisfying to see my pear tree planted in the yard has grown 4' or more since planting this spring. My peach trees have doubled in width and my grapefruit and lemon are doing well too. I'm not supposed to let them bear fruit this year, but I left a few lemons and grapefruit on the trees so I can at least get a taste.

Nice looking persimmons. They are about the only fruit I have this year due to that late April freeze. My persimmons are loaded. I got a few apples this year (first year). I planted these apple trees for the deer but ended up eating a lot of them myself. Lol

So the deer are sharing with you.
This tree is among several that are planted on a little flat with some sawtooth. I rode close to the other ones but saw no more fruit. May have to get you to graft some of the other ones but may find some females next year.
I agree that the persimmons were large!

Nothing like seeing your efforts come to fruition lak! The longer I do this stuff the more I like persimmons. Bout the only fruit I know I'm gonna get every single year. I must have one of the worst micro-climates of anyone around cause the pears seem to get wiped out with late frosts every year. 18 pear trees across property and prolly no more than a dozen pears among them all this year. Most have nothing. But...the persimmons are loaded! And to know you grew them from your own seeds is pretty amazing. Make sure your grandkids know that's Papa's handiwork producing fruit in the years to come. They'll cherish that tree and others grown from seed long after we're gone!

Wait until the coons find them. You won’t have to plant any more persimmons. They do a good job at spreading the seed around. Next thing you know you are being overrun with persimmons coming up everywhere.

Yes their seeds are better fertilized!

About five years ago I began grafting a bunch of male persimmon trees. They started producing decently after year three. Now I am finding little persimmon trees all over the place down there. Most of them are getting big enough now that I’m planning on harvesting some graft wood this winter from some of my known female trees that’ll be used to convert the seedlings over to female next spring.

It's always nice to see your efforts paying off. Some start with container trees while other prefer to grow the entire tree themselves. The key is to find success in the small things sometimes. Long term success can be frustrating, so finding these small incentives helps keep you motivated. The old saying is that the longest journey starts with the first step......
