Restoring my fathers old hunting Jeep

20180705_080439-800x600.jpg

Started some work on the original grill.. now I remember when this happened. My father was pulling out my brothers stuck van sooo he asked me to hook the chain on something solid lol needless to say he wasn't amused. I find it ironic I'm working on this 38 yrs later to fix it.

Some relief cuts and welding

I'll try to mold the shape with some glass

Its things like this that when I was ready to shoot my kids for some stupid move they had done, that I'd remember dumb things I did that my dad should've killed me over, yet usually tolerated quite well. Good read as usual.

So the first one came out decent. shape is correct. My only issue is getting the cardboard scored well enough at the bends that it doesn't fray like the photo. This one is glued, staples are just for originality. Don't give up on me still exploring but this one is going in my jeep

I got a nice windshield frame on a CJ5 forum, still going to fix mine but I'm running out of nice days to drive this thing so I couldn't pass a good frame up.

Any hole that was on this frame but not on the original I welded closed, I find it easy to stick a bolt in, weld it and cut it off

Also have to figure out why the drivers side is an inch lower than the pass side. Frame is even, so it's body related,

Used nutserts in the hat channel for the steps, spread some neversieze in the holes to prevent rust (Yeah right)

I got the wiring done except for the wipers. Still fussing with taping and routing some wire but to my amazement everything works as it should, even the horn. It's a bit concerning to me tho that the only fuse is on the flasher. I can be driving it but I still can't find the title to register it

Got the wipers wired up today. One works but makes a grinding noise the other doesn't work at all but gets power so I guess I'll be looking for 2 or rebuilding these

My cute little rubber plug for throttle cable hole

20180909_104609-800x600.jpg

Then I decided to get the steering right. I dropped the drag link got the wheels straight and needed to take off the Pittman arm to move it. Needed a puller so I figured I'll just take the column out.....well ...... after removing the master cyl. Breaking the break light switch and horn wire I found out I would have to remove engine, body or exhaust to get it out..? Not happening.... after a bunch of hrs I got the Pittman arm facing into the engine compartment to get a puller on it........wasnt a fun afternoon

Today's progress
Got the turn signal switch done. Cancel wheel is too worn to work but I can live with it

I'm almost out of things to do.
Need to hook up pto shaft for winch, I think I have to turn the case down to get the shaft to miss exhaust
Put on bump stops
Restore heater controls
Get winch cable on
Lots of touching up

Tomorrow I need to set the timing
