I have used cartons, too. I wonder if he worries about roots curling at the bottom of the carton?
 
I thought the same thing. I cut mine with a scalpel, I cut little diamond shaped cuts in the corners so the will air prune if they do start to circle. I havent had any problem with that because they get planted in the fall.I do over winter about a third of them and plant them as 2 year olds, but I move them to 3 gal pots for that. The problem I have is they dont drain as well as the 1 gal fabric grow bags and watering them all at the same time is either too much for the cartons or too little for the fabric bags. I think next year I will add more bark and sand to the cartons to try to fix that.
