image.jpeg Is that what this is ? I've noticed it doesn't respond too well to gly. This is a plot I will plant in the fall so what's my best bet to get rid of this ? I thought about mowing, waiting a couple weeks and then gly, but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks !
 
I don't have marestail so I'm not the best to comment, but I believe marestail has broader leaves.
I'm sure guys from VA will chime in...I saw loads of the stuff down there from the truck window.

Well, I looked up marestail and that ain't it, but I still don't know what it is.


Edit : After diligent searching on the net, I'm thinking it's dog fennel. What kills it best and what pre-emergent would you use ?

I thought it was dog fennel at first but not so sure after zooming in. If it is dog fennel, gly will kill it, but I would mow it first.
 
Yep looks like dog fennel. If you break the stalk, it’ll have a strong odor.

Not marestail but might be horsetail. Rumor is horsetail does not respond well to generous applications of lime (it's pH sensitive).
 
Definitely dog fennel. At this time mowing might kill it without spraying. But that stuff will linger. Seeds galore

And what about a pre-emergent ? Will me-too-lachlor keep it from re-emerging ? If so, when would be the best timing for zone 8 ? Thanks for your help.
 
You would need to spray Princep in the fall to keep it from germinating. I don't know about zone 8 but in 7A late Sept. or Oct would be best. As a pre-emergent.
 
Maybe I missed it, but don't we need to know what the crop will be before we can recommend a pre-emergent herbicide? And, I'm just shooting from the hip here, but princep in the fall isn't going to be there come spring, will it? I'm thinking half life is 60-days.
 
Princep would work in the fall because Dog Fennel is a winter annual that germinates in the fall, but your right he wouldn't be able to have a fall plot if he applied any kind of simazine or atrazine. He could do a spring plot because of the short 1/2 life of princep though. We used to do that to break the cycle of the DF or any other winter annual from dominating the plot with a fall pre, put in a spring plot which would serve as a cover crop and then the following fall not have this same problem. Princep (simazine) is @ $10/acre so that played a part in it for us.
But now I do only throw and mow and we did our first gly app last weekend.

This plot will be planted mid September in wheat or rye......probably both in a mix. I've never used a pre-emergent so I'm totally in the dark here.

Edit: Probably gonna be some AWP in there too.

I think I would skip the herbicides. Its almost an impossible situation from that angle. Its a biennial, perennial, that starts from seed or roots (maybe rhizomes?) in the ground. I was fascinated to see the stuff will germinate from seed anytime the soil temperature gets to 65-degrees, fall or spring - or winter in the deep south. So, if you going to use herbicides timing is a difficult proposition.
I've never had a problem with it. Like M-man said, just mow it and get your crop in a position to out-compete the dog fennel.

Thanks ! This plot has been in use for three years and this is the first time I've had this crap in it. There's other stuff in it of course and I think I'll just mow it next week and burn it down the last week of August with gly.
