Chestnut trees at Home Depot

Look what I found while walking through the garden section at Home Depot

They were located in the back. Hidden amongst the oak trees. This may be the better deal for wildlife purposes especially if you can get them to discount being that it’s late in the season. The trees looked like they were in a five to seven gallon pot and were 6 to 7’ tall.

Thats cheaper than the chestnut hill trees,I was going to buy some but they only shipped to 1 walmart in kansas.

The price really isn’t “that” bad considering you’re getting a tree that’s old enough to produce a few nuts next year. I’ve heard that some folks have been able to get them to mark them down to as low as $20 each late in the season.

I’m thinking about grabbing a Home Depot tree today to replace an underperforming Dunstan in my home orchard. Plus it will diversify my planting’s a little and give me access to Chinese Chestnuts for replanting a few years from now.

The long term goal with my home orchard is to have a source close to the house that I can tend to that will produce nuts for replanting and perhaps for human consumption as well.

if you go to the chestnuthills site they have their list of where they delivered to all over country.I talked to them last week and you can order in fall or you can even get a pallet of 3 gallon for yourself

I saw Chinese chestnut trees at Lowe's this year also. They were $35 and were odd shaped trees. The trees I saw all had large branches less than 2 feet from the base with the branches almost as large and tall as the central leader. I know that the Chinese chestnuts tend to do this but there was something weird about the tree shape that just didn't look right. They only had a few (4-5) at each store and the must have sold because I haven't seen them recently.

So how do you go about bargaining on trees at Walmart or any other store? Do you just ask for a discount or do you offer to but several trees?

At Wal-Mart I just ask to see the manager and ask if he’s willing to give me a discount being that it’s late in the season. At Home Depot it’s a different story as I don’t think they actually own the trees they are selling so they are limited on how much they can mark things down. The deal is at Wal-Mart if you want Dunstan trees.

I checked Walmart, Lowes, and Home depot around OKC and they don't carry any Chestnuts. In fact most of them looked at me like I was asking for a palm tree.

Yep that’s the place to buy late season. I got 3 female persimmons 2 apples and 2 Dunstan chestnuts last fall for 25$. They weren’t the prettiest but all have came out strong this yr. Of course I had sucked up to the guy working the lot all summer. I think they were jst ready to get rid of any remaining and start there Christmas stuff. Lowe’s I’ve bought apples and pears for less than 10 in late summer.

There are no late season Dunstons at the walmarts around here. They sell out the day they come in. Last year called one store on their delivery day and someone bought all 35 of them. The next store had just 3 left a couple hours after delivery. They held them for me. Kind of rough looking trees, but bought them anyway. Just saw today that 2 of them are leafing out now.

Tractor Supply is selling chestnuts and hazelnuts at my local store, and they are CHEAP. I think they are $4.99 and marked down from there. They are in rough shape though, so who knows if they are worth anything at this point?
