Nice job.

Well, this morning was interesting to say the least. Sat in my home made hay bale blind for the first time and had deer everywhere. One buck on the hit list (a weird 4.5yo 7 point) showed up but decided it was his lucky day. He walked off and was watching him scent check 4 does on a hill side, when I realized there was 9 nine does within 35 yards. They all kept getting closer and one was only 7 yards away, but they never got my wind. Finally left the blind about 9:15.

Back at the truck I was changing out of my hunting clothes when I heard a shot right up the road and a truck driving off. I jumped in my truck just as he drove by. There is virtually no traffic on the road, so I knew he was up to no good. I started to follow him but he took off pretty fast. I turned around and drove the road slowly, and sure enough there was a big doe that had been head shot flopping around about 10 yards on my land. I quickly took a video in case it would be needed and so there was a time stamp. I won't post it because it's pretty disgusting.

Here's the funny part... This genius was in his company truck! Needless to say, not only could I id the truck, but his name was all over it. I called the sheriff and Fish and Wildlife and they tracked him down, he confessed, and they gave him a ticket. Plus, this is a small town and everybody will know what he did. The penalty wasn't enough in my mind, but better than nothing. On a positive note, the wildlife officer did give me a salvage tag and even helped me load her in the truck so she didn't go to waste. She's skinned and hanging in my barn now.

Anyway, a good but very strange day.

Pics are always good, so here is the buck. He was a 6pt last year with strange forward slanting horns.

Wow ! Nothing like being able to catch a poacher in the act ! Good on you and shame on him !

I’m rifle hunting this morning behind my house. Just before I got into the stand I smelled a hog and sure enough when I could barely see through my binos, there the stinking sucker was. He walked off before I could see my crosshairs though, damn the luck ! Maybe he’ll be back, but I doubt it. They don’t get that big by being stupid.....

It wasn't quite that cold here this morning, just colder than a mother-in-law's heart !:) Gonna be high twenties in the next couple days though, and BTW, I saw zip this morning except that stinkin' hog. Wife put me on kitchen duty, better go check my deer chili !

Kinda slow on the ridge so moved down low. Hunted jst off this clover brassica wr plot. Has had good action but only a few tonight. Not high not low guess I’ll go mid level in morn.

First morning sit for the Hunt for Heroes. Somehow we are getting snow here in the deep South. Don't think the deer know what to do. Either way it's a privilege and honor to be able to sit with a veteran.

Looks to be a memorable day on several accounts!

Seasons since Sept. Two wks of rifle jst finished. Acorns everywhere. Deer holding tight. So tho conditions weren’t best spent morn still hunting. Walked up in 7 diff deer. Most jst watched me. Put scope on each jst for practice. Finally settled down against tree over looking this ravine/ creek/ holler. What ever you want to call it. Saw another 11 on evening hunt but no clear shot. All deer were bedded or on edge of my Ramdom Clusters. That I liked.
Cut the Christmas tree and decorated it w help of 3 and 6 yo. How many questions can a 3 yo ask???? I’m exhausted.

Family obligations so hadn’t planned to hunt. But woke before daylight w light snow. Can’t pass that so snuck out for quick hunt. Seen a few and one nice wide 8. Good brows but tines were not great. Got pass for next yr. Was tempting. Yes that is my ML laying there w gloves protecting scope. Remember the days of wrapping Saran Wrap over side hammer to keep powder and nipple dry??? And no scope allowed. Now spoiled. I once shot a nice running deer w that old sidehammer. Enough rambling, off to family Christmas shop. Yea!

Well, after an exhausting weekend guiding for the Hunt for Heroes I am beat. It was a weekend to remember. 8 inches of snow in the Deep South, cabin where the hunters were staying lost power, slow deer movement and a absolute monster shot at and missed. I will have to say I am proud and a little angry at the same time.

I had a game plan for this weekend based on wind direction, ease of access and deer movement. We saw deer on every sit with the best being the last. My hunter wanted to shoot a good buck after me sharing pictures of what was walking around. A lot of other hunters had a hard time seeing deer but my two properties we hunted really showed off this weekend. It goes to show what a little hard work will do for your deer herd. I'd like to think I also educated some locals about herd management.

Saturday afternoon was our last sit. I wanted sit in a 2 man ladder stand over looking a cutover. I knew there was a good buck in the area. We climbed into the stand at 2:30pm. At 2:40pm a doe fawn came out and started to feed. At 2:50pm I see horns and big ones at that. Told the hunter a there was a shooter and to get ready. He had a little trouble getting on the deer but eventually found him. The buck stopped 90 yards broadside I told him to take the shot. He didn't. The deer started to chase the doe. I told him "don't shoot" but he got excited and shot anyways as the deer was completely running in opposite direction. I was filming the entire thing. From the bucks reaction he looked hit. We sat there for another hour and saw a ton more deer. Another shooter came out but asked him to pass since Mississippi only allows one buck a day. We climbed down and didn't find any sign even with snow on the ground. We backed out and went back to camp. Couple hours latter went back with a blood dog. The handler worked that place for 2 hours looking with no luck. Upon editing the video and slowing it down it looked like he shot directly underneath it and hit the ground. Time will tell if he comes back or not. I'm angry at myself for not getting him that deer and mad at myself for being mad at him for the rushed shot. It's a learning experience all around. Either way it was a great weekend with great stories and memories. This was a picture I took of the paused video. He was a really good deer for our neck of the woods.
