Scarification of Red Cedar (juniper) seed?

Did some research and exploring on the place...
Male tree:

Female tree:

Each blue "cone" contains several seeds:


Looks like they go through scarification either by soaking in a solution of sodium hydroxide, or an acid. Then cold stratification. Then planting.
I collected hundreds of seeds today in a matter of minutes. I'm giving it a shot to see how it works. If I can get even 50% to germinate it should be really easy to get tree rows or pockets of bedding started.

Drive some OO posts in the ground in fence row fashion....songbirds will perch on the posts.....spray row every other year with round up to promote cedar germination and growth.

Thanks! Already had a similar plan based on the fact that every brushpile and every deciduous tree in the pasture ends up with cedars under it... give the birds a place to land!
Lol, I'm learning from you D. I had assessed a situation and developed a plan, before you gave me a plan based on the same principles. Feeling pretty darn proud right now

It is just reading nature.....does were hanging tight to one of the few cedar thickets on the place yesterday ahead of the front. You are more than welcome to come down here and dig all ERC you want!

I don't know... I spread them then forgot about em. I have cedars all over the place so I can't honestly say if what I did worked or not. There are cedars in those spots, but there are cedars in other spots also. Sorry, and dang.... this is an old thread to remember!

Thanks. I was wanting to try the same thing. Didn't know if it was a waste of time and if I should just put brushpiles or post and wire up to let the birds do it for me. It sure would be easy to just walk along the line broadcasting ready to go seed though.
