Drought and Survival

Talked to my folks this morning, they have 160 acres of corn planted around them, and the farmer got it in early. I thought that would save it, but they said a custom crew was in this morning cutting it for silage. Maybe with the drought the silage will be worth more than the corn; but more likely, the corn wasn't going to make much of a crop, despite the early plant date. Also have a buddy who usually does his tree cutting for future firewood in the spring or fall, but he's dropping hackberry and hedge trees this week in his pastures to give his cattle something to eat. He's already sold a third of his herd. Fortunately for him cattle aren't his main source of income, and he's not upside down in his cattle and only has about 40 head, so selling won't hurt him as much as others.

This has been the norm for going on 2 years now, NE Kansas isn’t supposed to get more rain than us, but the clouds have said otherwise for a while. Hopefully we get a break from the drought later this week, not too optimistic though.

We should have been in the thick of it, but of all the rain the last couple days we have gotten less than 1/4”. I hope these cooler temps at least make it your way…

Shows you the radar can lie, I would have thought you're getting more. KC and Topeka sure looked to be getting it. I know the difference 50 or 60 miles can make though, trust me.

Not a drop and now it’s firing up south of us????????
Hope you can get something Okie.

I wish weather could be shared. We’ve had rain measured in inches each wk for a month now. Streams are well above fishable levels. Great for those of us who run whitewater though.
Just returned from golf w an old friend in central PA. Been dry for them but just had some rain before I arrived.
Drought can test one’s nerves speaking from experience. Especially when there is money in the ground.
Oddly I’ve seen benefits following drought years but maybe I best not broach that subject at the moment.
Hope all get relief soon.

Beggars can’t be choosers, we’re getting rain, but still only the scraps compared to those north of us. Quarter inch so far. More to come hopefully, some projections even claim flooding before it’s done; I’m skeptical.

We are forecast 40% a couple days this weekend, but the amounts are paltry. It remains to be seen if we even get any. I’m such a pessimist…..

We are supposed to get 2 days in the 80’s and a couple 90’s and then back into the 100 all the way to the end of the extended forecast.
Looks like there are some storms firing up down your way Okie, any getting close?
