Drought and Survival

Flash Drought. Typically a somewhat limited duration of lack of rain accompanied by wind, and higher temps resulting in moisture evaporation within soils. My last one was 2018 beginning late July that year and receiving no rain until late Nov. Fall planting that year were a bust, browse was nearly depleted, only the alfalfa stayed somewhat palatable. Luckily there was a heavy hard mast and deer faired well for what would be a tough winter.

Advantages of a flash drought? These are my observations and doubt any literature supports it. But with these dry spells , not only are the wanted plants affected, but even the typically deep rooted , tubor type, weeds are also. Weeds succumb to the lack of moisture but also from the excessive heat and drying winds that come. While plantings seem to go dormant, awaiting moisture for their reawakening, so called weeds like thistle, struggle.
I found the following year of the 4 month '18 flash drought, that my clover plots had less nuisance weeds, and less unwanted grasses to contend with. And that result has continued to some extent over the last couple years.
Also my clover, alfalfa, and chicory, and brassica simply went dormant although appearing completely dead to the eye in the middle of the drought just like I showed of this years plots earlier. But as a hint a moisture appeared, the days became shorter and cooler, winds diminished, those hiding plants came forth with a vengeance that at least to my eye, were thicker, healthier, faster growing than in so-called typical years.
Oddly my very cool, very wet summers produce the poorest appearing plants even tho that desert look doesn't occur.
But the results of drought are harsh. No soft mast. I've lost at least 4 apple trees. Leaves. have nearly disappeared from the hard core pear trees, chestnut looks stressed, and I'm not sure yet of oak mast crop.
How to somewhat prepare for a flash drought?? Shall address my thots in the forthcoming post.
Farming.... not for the faint of heart.

NE Oklahoma is still very dry...I planted my plot 2.5 weeks ago with the promise of rain that never developed and now the next 2 weeks still look like 90’s and very dry...98 degrees today. Clover field looks like army worms took it but it just all went dormant. My waterhole in my plot is dry for the first time since it was created in 2014...

Okie- We are in the same boat down here in the SC part of OK. I keep waiting on some forecasted rainfall to plant. I think I’ll go ahead and plant this weekend. But you’re right, the 2 week forecast looks bleak. There are some slight chances for rain, but not much. All my plots are sprayed, dead and ready to plant, just missing that one key ingredient.

Looks like we have a growing chance for rain on Saturday. Maybe all those people camping at the lakes will open up the skies!:D

It looks like the "flash drought" has been replaced by flash flooding.

Was surprised we only had 1-2” from the storm. MD and PA got hammered.
Hopefully you guys needing rain get it soon.

Our rain gauuge only holds 5" and it was running over while it was still storming. We had some pretty stiff winds as the eye of the storm passed through.

We ended up in the 1-2” category from Ida. Plenty to get our plots going but the 10 day forecast isn’t very promising. I’ll be counting on heavy dew (common) and moderate temps (70’s) to protect the young plants.

Our Saturday chance for rain went from 70% with heavy rain and strong storms to 30% of isolated thunderstorms. :(
Gonna have to start watering trees this weekend. Prolly have to do it at night to avoid running deer into the neighbors.

Looking like thunderstorms moving across central Kansas right now :)

Yeah, we used to hunt in NC Kansas, they average 15” less rain than us yearly, but every time we get dry it seems they have the funnel over them. Hopefully what you’re seeing holds together and makes it to us, but it’s still 140 miles away from us and heading NE.

We’re looking at a ten day forecast with almost no measurable rain. Ida was nice but counting on morning dew and cooler temps seems like a roll of the dice.

Oh well, there’s always WR in October if needed.

As usual August turned out pretty dry here and September looks to be the same. I’m hoping by the third week we get a cold front with some rain. We used to have a weatherman in Ft. Worth named Harold Taft that was pretty dang good at forecasting. One of his sayings was “Droughts end in floods and floods end in droughts” I sure hope he’s wrong because we had lots of rain this year up until August, and we sure don’t need another 2011. Come to think of it, the fall of 2010 was so wet I could hardly get in my creek bottom except on foot. That’s the year I had wood ducks in my clover plot. In 2011 I lost about 75%/80% of my white oaks. :(

Well with the rain last week I knew a new plot would have its grass popping. So I sprayed combo of Cleth, AMS, Bean Oil on that plot with some showers coming tomorrow. I spread RC on this plot last week. Some WC showing its face in it. Also sprayed Gly on fescue to expand an existing plot. Sometime in the next few weeks I'll plant RC and WW in it and overseed the other clovers with WR. I'm not sure if I'm on plan B,C, or D, but I don't plan to go down w/o a fight. Good luck to you guys still fighting.

Got really lucky the last 24 hours. Somehow we got almost 2” of rain at the Massey! It’s only 13 miles from home and we hardly got a drop here. Hopefully it saved the brassica plot, might be too little too late though. With youth season going, I won’t go see for a while. Shouldn’t have to water trees now though, at least for a little while. A neighbor’s daughter shot a pretty good one this morning. I didn’t recognize it when shown the pic.

They took away our chance for rain Wednesday, so I'm NOT going to take a vacation day to broadcast tomorrow. Just wanting to give everyone within 200 miles of Independence, KS a heads up. We should get at least 3 inches of nice rain Wednesday now, you're welcome!

Well now, I’m hoping the last sentence is correct. And I’m also hope ing to get some rain from that system also so will be throwing down wheat and clover tomorrow. Weathermen are bigger liars than politicians. Good luck on your rain.
