Herd GT 77 Spreader

Yup, I've got that exact model for about 6 years, it's one of my favorite pieces of equipment, holds up to a full 100 lb bag of oats and is a well made, very consistent seed spreading machine that sure beats a hand seeder. Several friends have them as well, they're a bit expensive, but well worth it.
They make a variable speed model which would be very nice, and that would control your width. I'd say mine spreads clover and brassica seed about 16-20 foot total width, no way it spreads 28' wide with anything.
I use an 8 penny nail to set the gate width for clover, and a 16 penny for diakon radish, and about a quarter inch for grain like oats and rye. I made one alteration, I welded a 1/2" bar to the bottom to protect the plastic propeller and motor wire connections when you set it down.
Don't spread fertilizer with it unless you clean it well because it will rust away very quickly.
I am intending to fashion small adjustable plywood side shields on each side of the spinner with small U-bolts to limit the spreading width for seeding grass seed on logging roads.

Nope, this is not a Coca-Cola ad, here beside my ear you can see the extra 1/2" red steel bar that I welded below the seeder frame to protect the works from damage.

Here I'm using a borrowed Herd 77 seeder to put in spring oats and regal graze ladino for a new food plot for someone else. This plot turned out very nice and the seeding was so consistent it almost looked like a drill was used.

Thanks! So is there no way to adjust the spreading width/pattern without modifying the spreader?

Yes, if you order the factory option for a variable speed control knob instead of the standard on/off switch that I have.
I also found a heavy duty Cole/Hersee variable speed switch that was rated to take the load, at my local auto parts store, that fits right into the hole of the standard factory switch, but decided that it's not worth the $35 for my purposes.

Do you happen to have a link to the factory option for the variable speed knob? I can’t find anything anywhere, and I’m typically a good Googler.

Thanks for your help. Sorry to keep asking questions.

Questions are good, that's how we obtain more knowledge.

  • Optional equipment includes variable speed rheostat and electric actuator to open/close the seed gate

I obviously have at least three products loaded, and it's been so long I forget what they all were, but none of them were mineral. I think there was failed brassica involved due to a drought, which is interesting, the clover component survived and the radishes didn't.
Just warning you that i have another mineral post in the works, but this one doesn't come from the store, it comes from a chainsaw... Allen

Now that I’m ready to buy one of these, I can’t find a local dealer OR online dealer with them in stock. Very frustrating.

Welcome to the age of covid. A year and a half ago a popular item being out of stock was almost unacceptable, now it's a daily occurrence. On March 13th, 2020 the USA turned into a third world country.

Is there a story there?

Just a poor design. At some point the unit has to be taken off the ATV and stored, and it balances to sit right on those two bolts on the bottom of the motor, which is a recipe for the bolts breaking off, requiring a new motor. Hence the need for a guard.
