Coues Deer

Any of you guys ever been on a hunt for Coues deer in Arizona? For some reason I want to go hunt the little boogers. Something about that country....

I shot one with my bow in 2012. It’s a cool hunt that’s vastly different than a Midwest or East Coast WT hunt. Spot and Stalk, glassing for long hours etc. make that hunt fun and unique.

Mine was short, I spotted rutting activity the first day and after a 4 hour stalk it was over.

From all I read they are very hyper, or maybe nervous would be a better word. They do live in some pretty country though, but I’m too old to entertain thoughts of hunting them now. LLC, if you decide to go, good luck !

Yeah, one of my biggest fears in life is getting older and saying “I wish I had of....”. I’m 50. Time to go!

The Hunting Public crew has hunted them a couple times. Those episodes are a good watch!

Been there and done that. I really don’t see how I could have done much differently though, when I was young and in good shape I was also busy working 6/7 days a week making a living for a houseful of kids. I had to be satisfied with hunting and fishing close to home. I had some good hunts though, later in life, so I really have nothing to regret, but (as I’m still human) I wish I had tried to elk hunt more.

Just so you know I wasn’t poking at you. Just using that true statement to make a point to myself!

I definitely agree on the elk hunting, my first elk hunt was 2006. I killed a bull in 2008 and another in 2009. I would have sworn I’d be back every year and haven’t been since.

Like you it’s not for lack of trying but work and life are sometimes obstacles of adventure.

Brooks did an AZ hunt in Jan 2014 for Coues n javelina. Had a blast. Never was able to close the gap on the coues he encountered with guide but did manage to arrow a javelina.

Ive killed two studs in 3 years with bow. Id have three studs but lost one due to poor shot placement. The two i did take were hit in lungs and still traveled a great distance, they are very tough little guys. I went out last week for opening weekend and the bugs were overwhelming, had a run in with a red racer as well. My honey holes are currently over run with immigration issues too. Probably hold off till december/january hunts and hope the human foot traffic impact slows.

You know what they say. No pictures, didn’t happen.
